Sure he understands the law. Right in his post he says it's illegal. His comment was whether or not it was "safe".I'm with Cyle on this one.Pulling a skid steer around behind a tandem dump truck with no brakes on the trailer is way safer than a lot of the huge trailers you see being pulled behind pickup trucks.(which may be "legal") A competent experienced driver is also a huge factor .

Disclaimer;this is just my personal opinion,which everyone is entitled to,influenced by a couple million miles of driving more than most average Joes will ever drive.


I agree only one thing is missing here. The fact that if he had brakes they should lock up if the trailer becomes disconnected from the truck. This is a lot different than just considering if the truck could safely stop the trailer.

It also increases his stopping distance in an emergency situation. That difference could be whether someone lives or dies. Commercial vehicles should follow the rules to keep families safe.

I agree only one thing is missing here. The fact that if he had brakes they should lock up if the trailer becomes disconnected from the truck. This is a lot different than just considering if the truck could safely stop the trailer.

I'm really questioning how many people here understand how electric brakes work with comments like this. The pulling vehicle has ZERO, ZIP, NADA to do with if the brakes come on in the event the trailer disconnects from the towing vehicle. As long as you have a proper breakaway on the trailer and it's hooked up to pull the pin before the safety chains grab the brakes will lock up in the event of a disconnection.

It does? Do you have proof? Have you taken my truck and trailer and tested the stopping distance with and without a brake controller? I will bet you every single thing I own I can stop that unit faster without trailer brakes then ANY 1 ton pickup can no matter how high the trailer brakes are turned up. Or you're welcome to come for a ride with me, with the trailer fully loaded I can put your head into the windshield......

People who have never driven heavy trucks with air brakes have no understanding how well they work. The truck is made to be loaded to 55000lbs and stop very well in panic situations. Being empty and pulling a 14,000lb trailer takes absolutely nothing to stop between air brakes, engine brake, and transmission downshifting, the trucks stopping distance is not increased at all compared to it being fully loaded, hell the truck is capable of hauling the trailer and what's on it in the box TWO times over and stop it. I can't even run the engine brake on full without anything in the truck or it's way too harsh.

If people want to argue the legal aspect go ahead. But the safety aspect? If you think it's unsafe to drive in the summer you don't have a fawking clue and need to STFU.

I don't think this guy understands the law of physics.

I don't think you understand how heavy trucks are made because you've never driven anything bigger then a pickup from the way you talk.

I’m pretty sure I had my class 1 before you were even born. Your comments are digging your hole deeper and deeper. If you don’t think having working trailer brakes will help you stop quicker , then you need to STFU because you are clueless.

So a half ton grossly overloaded with a improperly tied down machine is ok because it has trailer brakes? Did someone drink too much stupid today? :confused:


Not by my logic. Id take the dump truck without the trailer brakes. You arent the swiftest guy around though, probably need all the help you can get.

I must apologize to CYLE as I didn't me for the thread to get this far along, was actually supposed to be more in fun so I am sorry Cyle.

Pretty much comes down to this. Is the truck more than capable of stopping without the trailer brakes, assuming it's in good running condition and its brakes are good and its heavy enough, yes without a question. Legally do the brakes need to be hooked up, yes. Would the braking system work more efficiently with them connected, yes.
