ktm's are the best bush bikes period. personally after owning a 450 and all the maintainance and extra expense that go along with them, id go with a 300xc. awesome bush bikes. imo

A great way to get to work and around on our roads in Edmonton. Our roads are as bad as the trails out at Bruderheim except for we have large potholes that will swallow a car. So if the bike is good out there it will certainly be great in the city.:d:d

It's not great for a longer trip but has no problem doing highway speed and it's really fun to rip it around the city. You will need to get your wheels balanced though. Mine had a pretty heavy shake once I got over 80km/hr. It's a good idea to get a fan kit for them as they can heat up if you're at a light for a long time. The headlight is not too great for night riding.

When I worked at Suncor I would drive it from Ft.Mac to the plant. I'd rip a few trails then hop on the hwy and pass people on Supertest Hill.

Riding around the city you have to resist the urge to wheelie away from every stoplight.

If you ever go riding in Nelson/Castlegar, you will only see orange bikes.

The 450s in the years your looking at have the RFS engine, and to my mind, it's pretty much bulletproof. You'll hear a lot of horror stories - mostly from guys that have never ridden a KTM - about maintenance, but they don't take any more work than any other brand of bike, and with the RFS motors, the maintenance is so easy and quick to do, it's really not a big deal.

The only bikes that are technically street legal (OEM) are the 2007 and newer 450 and 525 (530) EXCs.

The aren't street bikes by any stretch, so any kind of long pavement trips are a pain in the butt (literally), but they're more than capable of handling some commuting or highway stretches to connect trails. The fan kit and balancing the wheels are both great suggestions if you're going to be doing dual sport duty with it.

My '07 400XCW is the best bike I've ever owned, and I'm in no hurry to replace it any time soon.
