I talked to the service people at Dons speed parts and they told me cat has been using aluminum gears since 2014. Why is the new gearing such a problem? My 12 had the 2014 gearing and I never had a problem with it.

My aluminum gear with 2000km on it looks similar, maybe a little better. I wonder if the chain just seats deeper and it stops. I changed the oil three times and run atf in there. Going to the steel gear though for peace of mind.

There are lots of failures out there. If yours lasted 2000 km your did really well.

My understanding is they wear in hard initially and then wear slows down. Getting into the cat chaincase is a PITA though while changing the oil is super easy. If I'm going all the way in regularly just to inspect it better believe I'm putting something longer lasting in there.

Everyone bellyaches about the aluminum gear but l have never seen a picture of a failed one. Even if changed often the oil always looks bad.

I changed out my aluminum gear just so I didn't have to constantly change the oil, now it is a spring oil change and chain inspection
