My truck came with these chrome glue on box rail covers and all they do is hold moisture so over time they have started to cause some cancer. I've been wanting to remove them since I got it but have been to lazy. I got a tonneau cover for my birthday and decided now was the time to remove them before I put the tonneau cover on. I called line x and they wanted $330 to spray just the rails. I thought this sounded rediculous so I decided to try and do it myself with the rattle can stuff from Canadian tire.

Looks great. I too have a "truxedo" and I love it !! No more snow in the box of my truck !!! And really easy to roll back when you want to load up the quad !!
Looks like you did a really good job of the coating, was it hard to keep it even ?? How long did it take to do ?? How much it cost you in the end ?? And what brand of coating did you use ??

if your liner dont hold up you can alwayds redo it. I have seen guys charge only about $150.00 to do the top of the box. A complete was about $550.00 or so. So $330.00 seems steep for the rails. Also the chrome caps always seem to shake/rattle then causing the rust on the lower edge.

Thanks, the only thing i was a little dissapointed about was that it wasn't as textured as a thought it would be but other then that I'm really happy how it turned out and hopefully it stands up to the test of time. it was really easy to apply an even coat because it spray's out in blobs and then settles as it dry's. Took me around 4 hrs total. I sprayed 5 coats , 3 on the Sunday that I did all the prep work and the 2 more on the Monday night. I found it took about two hours to dry enough to be able to put a second coat on. It cost me around $40 with two cans of spray and the masking tape and tack cloths to prep it for paint. The plastic was donated from work as well as the sandpaper. I can't remember the brand but if I remember tonight I'll take a pic of the can.

That's what I figured at $40 I can afford to redo it multiple times if I have to. It's not a work truck nor a show truck so it will do just fine. It seems like the line x shops charge a lot for the small jobs cause they just don't really wanna do them.

Thanks man , ya my buddy looked into getting his bumpers and fender flares and the bottom foot of his truck sprayed and they wanted $1200. He's thinking bout trying it himself now. He did his quad bumpers and they turned out good and have held up so far.

I use the same stuff for anything that needs to be painted. I did the bumpers and roll cage on my wife's Ranger....an entire season of her sh!t-kicking it through the bush, and not a chip in it. I did my rocker panels and sled deck in it as well...super cheap alternative to powder coat and Line-X. I've tried a few different brands, but I found that Dominion Sure Seal works the best. NAPA has it for around $6 a can.

you're giving out your secrets again Todd.... I plan to use that stuff in the spring on several of the same projects, my quad bumpers, step guards on the exploder, probably the sled deck eventually too. Yours looked really good done in that stuff!
