Newbie help. 2007 TRX 400 FourTrax. Any good ?

Need some advice on a possible quad purchase . A family friend is selling his 07 TRX 400. 4x4 trail edition and don't know anything about these things and would like to know the good bad and the ugly before I consider buying it. This one has 2600 km. both previous owners were older guys that used it on the farm around the lake lot and fishing. No serious mud. The plastic is perfect, minor scratches. Racks are straight Original tires look new. Seat is perfect. Has a winch. He wants $3500 for it. Oil and air filter had been regularly maintained. It hasn't been used much in the last 2 years and assume it could use a tune up. Idles very low and will stall sometimes. Possibly old gas too. Drives and shifts fine. Read some negative things about the hydrostatic trans and some electric shift issues. Are these machines any good ? Is it priced right ? I would be using it to trail ride cut lines for the most part.

The idle can be turned up on the passengers/ right hand side, once you get good gas in it it will run much smoother, valves are nice too have set once, a quick compression test will let you know this.
Ask if the owner if the unit burns any oil, if so,,, how much oil will be needed between oil changes/ per 100 or 150 hours.

Its easy to adjust the clutch on those quads with wrench and flat blade screw driver.
Make sure the wires to shifting switch and electric plunger are connected tight and add die-electric grease to plug in connections, make sure back up foot shift arm is in tool kit too. The just in-case".

I had 3 Honda 350's and my brother had 2 Honda 500's as we're on a 680 and newer 500 at farm,,, all units have seen 10 to 15.000 kms with the odd unit seeing 22.000 and the other at 28.000.

We set the valves once after break in, and burn off many tires and brake pads till there worn down too nothing,,, 50 ish % that is.

Let your pal lean you the quad since its sitting idle any-who, and get some new gas in it too see how it runs. I'm sure the both of you will find something that will work.

Great info. Thanks for that. Is $3500.00 priced right for this one ? It is probably an 8.5 to 9 out of 10 condition wise supposedly doesn't burn oil.

Thats getting up there... I'd be more excited at $2500... that being said there is a lot of value in knowing the history of it.
For what you want it for there really isn't a bunch of alternatives without going up to 5-6k. My 2c...

Offer him 3K and I think you both make out like winners

Thanks guys. Much appreciated. Probably will pass on this one and go one better. Talked to a neighbour who bought the same 400 with the hydrostatic drive brand new And sold it the same season. He said the machine had no power with the Hydro trans. Could barley spin the tires in mud. No low end torque. Even noticed it loading into his truck. Will look for a 420 or 500.

Is it a 400 or a Rubicon 500? The Rubicon can have trans troubles. A 400 electric shift is great. I have a 1999 450 ES with 18,000 km. Only did one rear wheat bearing.
