We just ported over our mortgage straight across. Sold my house in Calgary and bought one up here for a little less. Didn't affect our mortgage at all. It can be done.
Was a life changing move as well. Quality of life is way better for us and the child...soon to be children...even if it delays...

I still think on minimum wage or whatever the average Canadian wage is, you are scraping to get by. Whether it's walmart meat and veggies or bargin deals. If you have young kids, one parent is working just to pay day care. Saving money to buy a beater...well that is how this whole thing...
