Could be from the old gas . Did he warm it up before riding it hard? \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\could have cold siezed it. Hard to tell what it needs with out tearing it down. New pistons and jugs i would assume !!! Good luck !

BRP needs to step up and issue a fix IMO. That being said , if the bars are tapered i would find some kinda clamp or spacer to stop the strap from sliding up on the bar and coming loose. Not sure what the handle bars look like but i assume this can be done??

Adding a Powercommander V is another good thing to do. My buddy has one on his and just put the Fix on. His pistons were in tough shape already. Just 400 miles on them. So far his sled is way better !!! Seems the thing to do on them !!!
Pretty tough to say with out seiing the sleds LOL. If the 900 has reverse you will need to get rid of it. That reverse system was not a good system. Had a bad habit of skipping then Bang good bye chain. Overall the 1M 900 was a good sled in it,s day. IMO worth $4000.00 max , that for a clean low...

You will find it fat on low end at lower alt,s. Cleans up as you get above 3000 ft and more as you go higher. Weird i know but the EFI adjusts as the alt goes up. Mine seems to run crisper above 3000 ft.
