When. I was a little kid, the words Ski Doo were synonymous with snowmobile. Then Polaris’ appeared in our town, then Arctic Cats. But Ski Doo somehow was still Canada’s snowmobile, and we’ve owned and enjoyed several of them over the years. Great machines, no doubt. But this fall when we were shopping for new sleds, I just couldn’t get the shafting Alberta and Saskatchewan has been enduring from Quebec. Forget SNC Lavallin. That peanuts. I’m referring to Quebec essentially shutting down The Energy East pipeline, biffing hundreds of thousands of westerners, gobbling the lion’s share of the grossly misnamed “ Equalization Payments,” but saying, “ buy our Ski Doos.” And not even a please.

So this fall I bought two Polaris sleds and We love them. What strikes me as odd is that hundreds of Westerners, all affected by Quebec, trade their hard-earned wages for Quebec snowmobiles. Don’t get me wrong...I admire and respect the brand, but really? Maybe this explains the clever rebranding with things like “Doo talk.”
well a skunk still smells even if you call it a dog.

Have the Americans been kind to us? Not really, but I’d rather be screwed in business by my cousin than by my brother.

my two cents (1.4 US)

You may find this hard to believe but BRP is a Canadian company that operates out of Quebec. Back in the mid 90's when the whole seperatist thing was at its height BRP or rather Bombardier at the time called all the employees at the Valcourt factory and the Sherbrooke distribution center into the Valcourt arena and explained that this company is Canadian but was not a supporter of seperatism and that anyone that didn't believe in that philosphy could meet with management after the meeting to pick up their final cheques. I have got to know a lot of BRP personnel over the years from upper management to the engineering group and I have not met one person that has ran down the west in front of me. As a matter of fact my Facebook friends list has over a dozen BRP and ex BRP folks on it and a lot of them like my posts on matters of politics and my personal distaste for Quebec politicians. Are there some arrogant pro French people that work for BRP? I'm sure there are a few but I haven't met them yet. They have treated me like a king on all the dealer council and engineering junkets I have been a part of over the years. They are life long friends most of them.

Be that as it may we’re still fattening the eastern hogs. I contacted BRP recently to get their position on these pressing issues to many westerners. Their position; “ we have no position.” Hmmmm.

no doubt many fine people and an excellent product. I’m just not too great with the irony.

Thats a lot of pent up hate. Polls show over 60% of Quebecors are in favor of Canadian oil and gas and a pipeline to get it there. Do you hate all Quebecors or just the politicians and seperatists like me?

Having lived there, no I don’t hate Quebecois as my family is French. What I despise is the one-sided politics and agenda. But I can see your point, and might feel the same we’re it my paycheque involved.

I make the majority of my income (98%) from farming. The sales gig is a distraction in the winter to stay in the sport. It keeps me on the snow for pretty much free.

Diversity is what most Albertans are realizing will get us all past the old way of thinking.

Bah ahaha. Get to bed...it’s a school night!

really no manufacturer makes a bad snowmobile, and these arguments of quality are worthy of grade school. I’ve owned the three major brands, and all were great machines. Yamaha makes great bikes, so I suppose their sled are equally great. I simply find many Westerners “ selective” issues with Quebec a bit of a stretch. As for supporting dealers, well mine is Canadian too.

Slamming the other manufacturers without knowing the client already owns one of those same sleds is costly. In my case $30k.

It is better if they support separatism, It could’ve fixed Canada long ago.

It’s still CANADIAN!! You’re supporting a foreign country! This is the exact childish attitude that gets us nowhere as a country. We need to band together and support each other, even if they don’t see the light, at the end of the day, we’re all on the same team! Albertas problems aren’t Quebec’s fault. It’s a world economy for resources, which we’re heavily reliant on for income. A coupe of pipelines aren’t going to change much, the province needs to attract business, diversify and bring back the Alberta advantage.

Oil will never be booming how it was, the world is changing, accept it, adapt and move on.

You're chasing something that's not there. There are plenty of reasons not to buy a Skidoo but being based in Quebec isn't one of them.

I donno, we keep sending them billions in equalization every year they don't seem to mind that.

They don't seemed to concerned about burning Saudi oil everyday, but you try and put a AB crude pipeline through Quebec and watch out.

There attitude has impacted the pocket books of many westerns.

I wouldn't begrudge anyone who avoided supporting Quebec.

Maybe Narona will wear a I love Alberta oil t-shirt? Could be good for sales......

Quebec is fukked and Bombardier is fukked too but I would argue that BRP stands on its own two feet and provides good paying jobs in what is largely a welfare state. I bet if you spent some time in Quebec you would find the same rural/urban divide issues that have exploded in AB and BC over the last decade.

Quebec is an economic failure. If you take some of the few good paying jobs they have away is that going to fix the problem or make it worse?

My sled does suck but it's not a Skidoo. My junk is from Thief River Falls.
