I'm not sure what the grain smoke smells like. Good question. I was thinking a grain stove might have the convenience of the pellet stoves at a lower price. Just not sure how well they work. From a little googling it seems like guys who use it as a primary source of heat want pretty clean...

You're right that it's not getting much air across the cylinders but it would certainly be cooler if it was not working as hard. Good point about the chain tensioner but I think there is enough play in the spring loaded tensioner that the chain would stay tight.
