Hello all, having a couple issues with our 2018 kodiak 700 hopefully someone can shed some light on. I reciently changed the oil on the quad now it’s smoking like crazy? Yamaha oil / filter. I noticed the manual said 2.1 litres of oil yet going by the dip stick it takes almost 3 ? Anybody have any experience like this? Thanks

Does it have a locking or screw in dipstick might have to take the reading without locking or screwing in the dipstick putting in that much extra is alot for a small engine

No it’s just got a rubber seal on it , just a friction fit .

Are you checking it with it fully seated?
Being 50% over the stated capacity maybe its going through the crank vent or somewhere and burning off excess.
Have you changed the oil before yourself?

Recall on these engines. Mine started this last week. Yamaha will replace the piston . Subaru built the 708 engines with chitty oil rings. Yamaha will overhaul it up to 2025 , even though it only came with a 6 month warranty.

They had subaru build the motor? Yah that’s a mistake, have yet to see any Subaru run for a long time.

Well that’s good news I guess. I’ll have to make an appointment with a dealership I guess and have it looked at . Pretty disappointing all the same, I had a grizzly for years that was trouble free. This is my wife’s quad and has had a very gentle life so I don’t know. After a bit of reading looks like the dipstick is a common problem to , didn’t really find a right or wrong answer to what a guy should be going off for the oil level the manual or the stick . I’ll have to ask about that to . Thanks guys

So what was the process of getting this recall completed? I have an appointment Monday, just wondering what’s involved? If they have to tear the engine down to determine if it’s applies to that engine. I don’t really want my quad in pieces for a long period of time during riding season. Thanks

just phone your dealer explain the situation that it’s smoking and consuming oil, they’ll check your VIN and see if it falls under the TSB and then they will order the parts and install. At least that’s what my dealer did, I didn’t have to take it in before hand, just dropped it off once the parts were there, they just phoned me the other day and let me know it’s ready just have to go pick it up.

Thanks . I was emAiling a Yamaha rep he said 5 years from the registration date . I would assume that’s the sale date . Anyway it would be the last year for the 2016 guys so if you know anyone with one let them know. Unfortunate Yamaha isn’t reaching out to owners on their own but at least they will cover the repair if your quad has symptoms and contact them .

Well , the kodiak is back all fixed up. Had it done at central cycle in witaskwin . They done a good job and the process was pretty painless, quad was only there for 2 days . Now the question is should a guy keep it or sell it ? Thoughts? I don’t know if I trust it now to be honest

Yea good time to sell people will pay top dollar for used Kodiac/ Grizzly and Yamaha has gone back to the more reliable 686 Yamaha motor on the new models downside is you would be unlikely to find a new one this year not sure what it will be like next year

ch!t you not , I had a guy offer to buy the kodiak last weekend when I was dumping the trailer in Rimbey. Guy just pulled up and asked if I wanted to sell it , nuts . I had it in the bed of the truck but I was caught totally by surprise lol. I just said I wasn’t interested, 6 of one half dozen of the other I sell it for a decent price and get bent over for another. I am just going to hang on to it for now a my wife really likes it.
