I have a 1985 YFM80. I got it brand new when I was a kid and I've given it to my son. As I understand it, there's no way to lube the rear end without breaking it down, which I'd rather not do, but as far as i know, it's never been lubed in 30 years. I was told these came from the factory lubed with grease, not gear oil. Would it be ok to install a grease fitting and give it a shot every now and then?

Geeze, not sure it that's a good idea if there's nowhere for the old grease to be displaced. If it's a sealed unit, it won't need to be relubed regularly, so I'd probably pull it and do it properly. I could see this being a great big pain if it had to be done annually but not every 35 years or so. Besides, if you have a look inside, at least you'll know for sure what kind of shape it's in and whether or not the factory grease is still good.
