I have driven one a bit , and posted a short review on here .
Where do you plan to ride it , it is a very purpose built machine , with a very narrow focus on the type of terrain it suits ?

Plan on using it in the mountains on logging roads.

They just did a review of them on the hunting channel, seems like by doing some clutch fixing it can hold its own.

Here is some very quick points that stood out & I do know a fellow that races them as well ....
Very high Reving motor & not much torque or lugging with this baby . They scream / think crotch rocket . Underpowered compared to competition.
Yamaha quality / but certainly not bullit proof .
Very stiff suspension / not trail friendly unless you have it pined to make it work ..
Too high geared ( thus the gearing kits), a blast to drive , but not a trail machine at all.
Great in the desert / capable in the dunes with suspension work .
Not a mud machine do to a few design flaws ...
Clutching / protection underneath / radiator size & location/ axle size and the machines ability to be very uncomfortable at slow speeds ...
Personally, I would not touch one for our terrain up here , the X3 is a far superior machine in all aspects ...
But any thing can be made to work if you chuck enough $$$ at it .
Very poor resale & a lot of dealers are not even wanting to stock them even ...
It's a good machine BUT it is pretty much only happy in the desert ....
Just my two cents ....

Just a few questions on your reply.
You say resale is very poor but I have searched and can't fine a used one anywhere?
Also you say they scream but are very underpowered? I am confused as the same basic engine in the Viper is a torque master and pulls very hard.
But maybe its just the gearing like you say!
The original post was for logging/mountain roads where I thought this thing would shine but you say its not trail friendly.
Do you mean slow speed technical trails where the CVT shines? I don't think 06YamahaApex was asking about it being a mud machine.
I am not bashing your reply just looking for clarity. I was going to ask the same thing as 06YamahaApex until I cam across this post.
Would it be a good machine for hard packed mountain logging roads? I thought the razor 1000 seemed underpowered and slower than I expected.

Just to clarify , these are my opinions only ..
power :
I think they are around 112 hp
An X3 is 156
An rzr turbo 167
They are very high reving and high geared , thus the need for gear reduction kits .They are also having many clutch issues.
Suspension is on the very stiff side , to do OK on smooth roads etc , you would need to do some shock tuning .
My point is it is set up for fast ROUGH desert runs , not smooth logging roads .( stock)

In tight trails ( not logging roads ) it is to high geared / to high reving / and sprung way to stiff, among other things to make it a great trail machine ( without major changes $$)

In terms of resale , the sales have been brutal on new units . So I would expect the resale value to reflect that , though I have no proof of that.

We log a lot of miles and I have yet to cross paths with one on a trail in western Alberta . Yet I see wildcats / rzrs / mavs and now X3s constantly..

In short I am not say implying these are a poor machine . Rather a very single market focused platform , not a diversified platform for all types of riding .This is the reason you don't see any around here , as the other machine are much more capable in a variety of conditions ,in stock trim .

Again these are my observations, but others will agree in large #s I would suggest....

As with rzrgade I have never seen a yxz in use. So on that note I wonder how many dealers stock parts for them? Or if you would be waiting a week every time a replacement part is needed?

I do agree its not a tight trail or mud machine as this has been proven for years the CVT works better in these areas
I was considering one for High mountain logging roads in BC
Sure would like to ride one though and compare that to say a naturally aspirated Razor 1000

It is Yamaha's flagship sport model .
It should be compared to the same flagship models as other brands ..
The new Textron sport utility has more HP ( NA)

The rest can perform well in all situations, while the Yamaha can not with out upgrades .
You never know what trails you end up on , so it is nice to have a capable all around machine .
It was a blast to ride in the desert , but honestly you could not give me one for our trails where we ride ....jmo

Well depends who you ask I guess.
The Razor can't perform well without ball joint upgrades,Axle upgrades, and Clutches every 2000kms
I have talked to quite a few RZR owners who spent lots of money upgrading so they weren't breaking all the time on the trails.
Not sure there is a permanent fix for their clutching woes though.
Cant really say for the Maverick's as I haven't heard any beefs.
When I compared the steering and suspension components side by side with a Razor and a yxz at Riverside I can see how much tougher the Yam may be.
Of course I said may be.
I liked the fit and finish better on the YXZ compared to both the Razor and Maverick but that is true Yamaha again.
In the end it depends what you intend to do with it. My years of mudding are over and won't go back to AB west country trails.
That being said I don't want an uncomfortable ride if it rides stiff without opening it up and ripping with it as the Razor does ride nice.
If I can ever ride one then I can report back.

Honestly I haven't has any issues with my RZR 1000 with the 2000km I have on it, I haven't even changed the belt yet. And I ride mixed terrain, a little mud, lots of trails and bush roads though. I think for what you want to do reliability won't be an issue.

I ride with one all the time.My buddy has one, pretty good unit.He did gear it down, made it alot more user friendly.He doesn't mud it,he rides ice in winter and sand dunes in summer and does some rock crawling. Just as fast as my XP1000. Suspension is great once you spend the time and set it up. Rides as good or better than my rzr.The biggest learning curve is driving it and getting used to the engine and shifting.Once you figure it out, it rips. Quality is top notch. Would I trade my rzr for one? Yes.Would I ride it in the west country mud and trails? not a chance, out of its element.In the dunes with a turbo,wow!

I have rode with the Canadian edition with the standard transmission last summer we drove logging roads and some fairly tight trails with water bars seemed to do ok in that type of stuff. Lacks storage and personally the standard transmission is limiting in certain situations.

The new X3 (2018)is a beast ...
172hp of beastiness...
(Yamaha is around112 hp I believe .)
0 to 60 in just over 4 seconds ....

The Yamaha goes good , but not in the same league as an X3 in terms of performance or suspension wise ....
