I am almost done my 174 build and decided to change my oil while i was at it and when you spin off your oil filter make sure that the rubber seal does not get left on the engine. Mine did that and it felt a little funny when I was putting my new filter on so I double checked and sure enough the o ring was stuck to the engine. I easily removed it and did a proper instal but geez that could be a costly mistake for someone so I felt it worthy of a little thread, just a heads up. I was surprised how dirty my oil was with only 400 kms on it, glad that I changed it out and will do another in 1000 kms from now, oil is cheap.

That will be your breakin oil, your next oil change will be normal.
I only ever did ONE oil change per season on my Nytro, there is no need to do more during the season unless you are pushing over 5,000km during the season on the same oil.
You will go multiple seasons on the same plugs, if you even ever change them. The only real maintenance area that needs regular attention is the gear box on these sleds.

Please post a pic of your 174 SW.

Yah plugs are good for a couple years but always pull & regaping them.
I left my plugs in one year instead of pulling them & had so much fun getting them out lol.

I did the exact same thing with o ring how did you get oil out of reservoir? I tried half cutting old oil jug and funnelling it to pan but it pretty much drained through bottom of machine what a mess!

Yes I had a mess too, dont know a better solution yet. The sled holds 2.9 litres according to yamaha and I put 3 litres in and sure as hell it was above the full line.

Surely the level would have dropped off after you started the engine and rev it once or twice, no?

No the level was above after I ran it for a bit. I drained it down to the level after but I think the extra 100 mls would not be a big deal.

I went ith the 0-30 semi synthetic, and I think I will continue on with that oil for reasons that I have just learned about recently. I had a conversation with my additive rep and he explained to me that a semi synthetic is a better oil because it is a little less slippery and sticks a little better to everything inside just a little better, seemed logical to me but in the end you can't go wrong with either.

X2, this is true. Full syn can also unseat piston rings, i have had to repair a couple of motors that lost compression caused by oiling.

That's an interesting take on full synthetic oil. I always assumed it would better after motor is broke in ...less wear and better lubrication properties. I was planning on running 0-30 for a year or so then switch to 0-40. Thanks for the info. I know at work here when we switched to full synthetic in some of our motors running hydraulic drives they last way longer. Definitely made a difference on wear. But I guess that's going from conventional oil to full synthetic

I think that your doing it right also. My personal take is if you trust the brand oil your using, then use it. In my Yamaha 4strokes i have alway's used Yamaha lube (gold bottle) nothing else. If the Yamaha engineers say use this, that is what i'll use. The only times i have seen issues with oiling is when an aftermarket brand is used that is making big claims and there are many of them. I avoid all those oil's. But never with a recommended OEM approved oil.

Interesting that the 1049's and the Apex motors all spec'd a 0-40 semi syn, and now the 'Winder now specs a 0-30. I used the full syn 0-40 Amsoil in the Apexes and Nytros, and Yamalube so far in the SW.

I also cut a hole in the belly pan for drain...fawk did I make a mess the first time. :)
