Stock nytro vs viper vs sidewinder

Ok things are too quiet here. Lol. I’m having a dilemma on my sledding future. So I’ve had recently sold my 174 sidewinder....that was the funnest Yamaha sled to date. Sold this cause the type of riding we do lately the 174 was to much sled(wish I would of left it 162)...the revy days just don’t happen anymore.

Bought a 18 cat ...it was pretty fun for the type of riding we do, so decided that a alpha would be worth a try.....well this sled was very agile and fun, but I had some issues with the rear rail which put a bad taste in my mouth so I sold it. I figured at this point in the game and the price a guy pays for the sleds they shouldn’t need tweaking.

So currently sitting sled-less...don’t think I’m going to get many sledding days in but would like something to bomb around with the kids.

Thus the title....so don’t really want to spend much this year with work being so volatile. Ive been looking at used Nytro’s, just cause there price pretty reasonable and a 4 stroke lasts.


My question for the guys that went from a nytro to a sidewinder....is this crazy talk that I want to buy a nytro? Lol. What are the must haves to make the handling the best? I did have a nytro for a short term but didn’t care for the rear skid...it handled like sh#t.. hard to ride i felt. I’m not looking for a mod sled, stock or 180 kit.

I guess I could add even a viper to this mix.

Make a 2021 twin rail mountain max. 174 with the 165 tunnel. Guys would pay top dollar for the Alpha skid. Probably save money in the long run. Or a sidewinder there still really fun.

If you're looking for fun a stock Nytro isn't very close to the top of the list. I've spent a couple full days on one in the mountains and the only fun thing about it was trying to see how bad it was at climbing even on hero snow. They handle heavily and poorly on bad snow and are under powered with crappy tracks in better snow. I'd want a 180 kit and 162 2.5" camo track at the minimum to even consider it and even at that point I think you'd be having more fun on any other mountain sled from 2010+.

I did a build thread a few years back. Pretty sure I got hands down the best handling nytro built. Lots of work went into that one. Still own it. Haven’t ran it in three years.

yeah I guess it’s hard to go backwards if you have something better to ride. If a guy is going to run a 4stroke in the mountains for non hill climbing events ...not worth going to anything else but a sidewinder I suppose.

just curious for guys that have gone from apex, nytro, viper to sidewinder on their thoughts.

That’s half the fun. I have more fun in the garage some days than the hill. Don’t fight it,just doo it. When your laying on your death bed you won’t have any regret.

Damit your right!!! I too have had some of the best days in the shop building. Hmmm what to do !!!!

Ive seen a couple Sidewinders on Kijiji for around the $10,000 mark. Seems pretty reasonable and you already know what you like and didn't like with your first one. So I guess it depends on budget and if you have the ability to just leave it as bought, sadly I do not have the ability and get yelled at from the wife constantly cause nothing is stock. Apparently if you spend money on a new toy you shouldn't have to modify or change it, wheres the fun in that???

Riding group kind of changed. All bought matching t3s. Kind of turned into a follow the leader pissing match full time. Pretty fun. Kept thinking I would keep the nytro as it’s still fast, as a ditch banger. Haven’t got the snow. Been burning around on the 74 elan around home.
If I was going to daily the nytro in the mountains I would put a 3” track on it and pull the skins a arms off and run a set of cr racing 36” arms. Im not sure I’m a fan of the plus forward a arms. Sled like to push forward when on one ski rather then turn. I think the arms promote that though as they take the dartiness out of the sled.

Yeah that’s what got me looking. Figured if I don’t get out much it’s no biggie for it to sit around rather than a 2021 twin rail 174 mountain max. Lol

What’s everyone’s experience on a 190 mcx viper ? Probably handle way better than the nytro... that’s the only Yamaha 4 stroke I haven’t tried.

I know your pain, started riding 4 stroke turbo yamy's in 04', Went from RX1's to Apex, Friends with Nytros and Vipers. I found the Nytros to be ill handling for my riding style, Hated them like a skidoo rev chassi. The viper was an improvement over the Apex, but not worth the dollar cost to swap over too. Then I started riding 2 stroke Cats and the 15' was pretty good, the 18' was awesome. But, always missing Yamy power and reliability feeling. Late last year bit the bullet and purchased a Winder 162. (still wondering if I should have went 153") The sled in stock form worked good. I'm like most and have to mod, change Sh@t to suit my style of riding. Today the sled is one nasty beast, yes it is heavier and harder to ride in the trees than my 18' Cat, but I can still do it with just a bit more effort and I'm 58 years old and ride with guys that are in their early 40's on 2 strokes. I would NOT try this on an Apex or Viper and as far as a Nytro goes I would have to quit riding..............

Even as good as the Sidewinder was stock, I feel you need to do mods if you still want to tree ride it. I'm 5'8" tall and weigh 180Lbs and I can bush wack this sled which is about 70% of the riding we do. In the deep steeper pulls this thing makes you giggle like a school girl. The only thing I miss from the lighter 2 stroke is just that, it is lighter.

Sweet sled. Yeah I would totally go back to a sidewinder but don’t want to spend much this year. I totally agree with you in the blah feeling riding a 2 stroke.

I have a friend who rode Nytros for years, stock and mcx 180. He’s a flat lander so all his were 144’s. He bought a new 141 2.25” lug viper in 2015 with a mcx 190 and loves it. As you know with vipers/sidewinders, you get ****ty AC steering systems and overall maybe a less quality build, but better handling and balanced machine than the nytro. I think it will all depend on your riding area and expectations. There are some great deals on used Nytros right now, have another friend who just picked up a mcx 270 174 Nytro for $3500 the other day. Good luck
