need some opinions about trucks.

hey, well i don't know how many of you read my thread about the half ton mega cab a while back, but i'm still in the market for a used truck. what i can't decide on is this. is the solid axle under the 3/4 ton dodge worth having a smaller cab than say a 3/4 chevy with the ifs? i mean really, what are the benefits of the solid axle? i'm not really to brand specific at this point, just want what will suit my needs- basicly a good sized cab with seating for 6 and at least a 6' box, and 4x4. i'm still in the air about the diesel. i do want a 3/4 ton just because i know that i will find many uses for the extra capacity. what do you guys figure? i'm not looking to start a loyalty war here, just want to see how you guys like your trucks, and what you might like to change or could have done with out. thanks! :beer:

I quoted in your other thread, but for me because I use my trucks daily as work trucks soild axle is huge for me...The Chev is a beautiful truck, but for where we work, IFS just doenst cut it...

From what I remember for what you need it to do, I cant really see a problem. This is a really tough question to answer as we all have different needs...since I am such a strong believer in soild axle and diesel its very hard not to give this as advice. You need to look at what YOU need the truck for and base your decisions on YOUR needs...

you have a valid point, i wasn't looking for someone to tell me exactly what truck to buy, i was just curious as to what guys regretted getting or not getting when they bought their trucks. i just know that there is a wealth of knowledge and experience on this site and i like to bounce things off you fellas.

maybe i should have stipulated- for you guys with trucks as your daily driver, so basicly guys who don't use their trucks for work, mostly just for play, what do you think?

i have a dodge quad cab 3500 and love it only down fall is doing ball joints once a year but not really that bad , the only thing i would do diffrent is maga cab , with that sayed my buddy has a chev with 6.6 and it is a really nice truck to drive also and i think ther box is a few inches longer, head to modify my deck ramps to fit in the dodge tuff one both nice trucks i was looking at both when i bought mine and just went with the best deal
good luck ( dont buy a 6L ford lol )

I agree, I have the same truck 04 3500 and I love it. Didn't do the ball joints until this year. I wouldn't buy anything but a diesel though.

I know lots of guys will give me flak for this, but I seriously love my 6l Ford. There's tons of room in the crewcab, it's 10x the truck my last GMC 2500 was. It's bone stock, so aside from the odd injector, I really haven't had a lot of grief with it. Mileage sucks, but it is just my grocery getter, so not a big deal. I don't work it, nor do I pull anything heavier than my Bobcat with it, so it works great for me.

i get 10L\100k it's a 5.9 but my bud got a 6.7 dosen't get near the milage i do . but the exhaust brake and the 6 speed manule\auto shift trans is sick:beer:

I have a 06 3500 Mega Cab 4x4 diesel. I have a AFE cold air intake, boost fooler & have taken the factory rail pressure bypass out & put a blocker one in, other than that it is completely stock. Normal driving on the highway in the summer just by itself i can get about 23 MPG staying between 110 & 115 km/h... this is actual figures not going by the bullch!t meter that comes from factory. Pulling my 29' bumper pull loaded up to go camping i weigh out in the area of 11,500 to 12,000 kgs, depending on how long i am going camping for. I get between 14 - 17 MPG, depending on the terrain of course. This time of year with the warmup time & all i usually average about 15 MPG. If i had to do it over i probably would have waited 1 more year & got the Hemi in a 3/4 ton. Reason being is i really can't say i need a diesel for what i do for a living & the trip to work is usually 3/4 over before i can take my gloves off... this is after a 20 minute warm-up with a winter front & belly tarp on. I know i would miss the power to pull up almost any hill at posted highway speed pulling a trailer, but i think i would learn to live with it. Please take this with a grain of salt as i have not gotten rid of the diesel & went back to a gas job to verify my reasoning!!!:d:d:d

as far as kms go, does 217 000 on a 2007 6.7 sound? what are some problem things to look out for at this stage? a few guys have said ball joints go frequently, how about the motors? any problems at all?

don't mean to crack on your truck just last two service trucks have been 550's and the frist was 3 egr coolers 2 sets of injictors 1 set of heads 1 turbo

second wich i still drive has 2 egr coolers 1 set of heads 3 motors a turbo , injectors but i do work them hard but this last motor seems really good so far but then again it only has 6,000 km on it think i will try a 550 dodge next

but i have friends with this truck with no prob but don't work it like i have to

A truck with 217,000km can be costly. A lot depends if you can do work yourself sometimes your better off paying more for a lower km truck. At that mileage it could easily need already or soon, ball joints, all u-joints, steering, etc etc. If you can do it yourself and know when you buy the shape of them parts then you can be ok. But if you have to pay a shop to do it you can be forking over $3-5k pretty quick. I personally just bought a 07 5.9 Cummins 2500 with 70km for $35K OTD and all options besides for navi.

When I was looking a truck like that 6.7 was probably like $25k depending on options and shape? To me, i'd rather pony up the extra money and I can do all the work myself, it's just not worth it sometimes. The 6.7 is iffy, real iffy with that many kms. Personally I wouldn't go close to one with that kind of mileage, the dpf can cause some pretty big issues.

I wouldn't buy a hemi again either, especially in a 2500/3500. My 08 1500 was only getting about 500km to 100L in the city. My diesel gets a lot better then that, and is a lot more beneficial for things. I really can't see any advantage to buying a gas job. Diesel will cost more but hold it's value a lot better to.

IFS is probably ok stock for a daily driver that isn't worked hard.

Yep, I may be the only one who has ever said anything positive about a 6l. Oh, and the poor buggars at Ford who are trying to make a living selling them.:d:d

love my 06 180000km and going strong pretty good milage to about 16mpg loaded with a welding 24/7

I have an 05 F-150 King Ranch with a 5.4 gas engine. It is the Supercrew 4x4 and I use it to pull one sled on my trailer. 135000 trouble free clicks. It is all I need.

i really do feel sorry for the guys at univirsal ford and to make it worse every time you want to work on the engine you have pull the cab off lol
