Can a Ford 6.4 be turned into a reliable rig?

Hey guys I need a bit of help with knowledge on the ford 6.4. I am looking at a 08 because of the deck it has on it. Now should I spend the money on the truck and try and make it bullet proof or should I buy it and rip the deck off and put on a dodge chassis? The deck is very hard to find and pricy. so I will probably end up buying it but what do I do with it after. has 160,000kms and is claimed to be well taken care of. Any thoughts?

I have had 2 6.4 fords both have been awesome I have an 08 f 450 right now and its been built proof

I would hesitate to call the 6.4 awesome, still a lot of them with issues but nowhere near the 6.0. It should be a good truck if you delete it, keep up on oil changes to keep the injection system happy, and don't go putting a 300hp tune in it and driving like an azzhole.

Like Bnorth said.....DPF delete for sure (programmer needed). EGR delete helps. Regular oil changes with good oil. Regular changes of the fuel filters as specified. Drain the water separator once a month just for peace of mind. A reputable shop told me the biggest issue with the 6.4 is guys running high HP, hot programs and driving the stuffing out of them. They are just asking for an issue. When I was doing research on the 6.4 myself, deleting the DPF and regular maintenance were the two common themes for longevity of the 6.4. Love the 09 I'm running.

what will the deletes cost? the truck will be used by my employees so I would like a programmer that can be removed from the truck nothing that is on the fly. if it is possible I would de-tune it for them. but probably just leave it stock.

Look into what SCT has to offer. I think they do a hand held programmer that just flashes the ecm.

Ya the 6.4 can be made pretty reliable and make some serious power! programmer,egr delete, exhaust is all you need. We got a couple guys down here running new mishimoto intercoolers and different turbo internals and seem to be having some really good results. Most guys here run a FASS pump as soon as they buy them we have had some issues with bad fuel lately.

X 2 on the fass fuel pump, having two, 2 micron spin on filters with drains is awesome peace of mind and has saved me a couple of times, fass also makes a fuel pump heater element.

The first run 2008 models had some rad leak issues.

All the 6.4 have rad issues even with the fix.

Rad is laid back too far and rocks in the saddles causing the tanks to flex , core different.

Odd I had 3 - 6.4 L F350 and not one rad leak or issue, all running custom 210 - 310hp tuning so IMHO the 6.4L is reliable.

Original poster I have a couple different delete exhausts 5" , and a tuner or 2 for real cheap laying around. I Have a couple 6.7L trucks now so don't need the 6.4L stuff any more.

I have 235k on mine. Bought it new in 09. Great truck. Just replaced the rad a month ago. The only regret I have is that I waited until the 60 k mark before I did the exhaust, programmer and delete. Warranty caused me to hesitate but sure am glad I did it. I credit those mods and regular maintenance for the trouble free kms. I also added an espar engine heater so idling is at a minimum. Great truck IMO.

I run an 08 f350. Love the 6.4. I have it fully deleted. I think thats the only way to make it bulletproof. Just don't bag the crap out of it with a huge hp tune. The truck has 103000 km on it and has been pretty much problem free. I have had the replace a couple cheap things here and there. But nothing that really has to do with the reliability of the engine. That being said, my dad had an 08 f350 and put 200000 km on it trouble free. Nothing but regular oil changes. He sold the truck to a friend of his and it has still been going strong. I bought all the stuff and did the work myself. I also put a coolant filter kit on it. I bought most of it off ebay. Think I paid around $1000.00 for the egr delete, coolant kit and h&s mini maxx. Bought a exhaust kit from a place in town. Paid $700 for that. On the 08's there is an updated rad hose to replace the upper hose. They are none for leaking around the connections because they only have 1 o-ring. the new one has 2 and solves any leaking issues.

I have an 08 and it's been flawless since I deleted at 36k miles. 1 radiator at 26k and the 2nd at 90k. Other than that not a single problem. Oh, and it will flat out embarrass most vehicles on the road.
