I normally run 10/30 in the winter, Ukrainian Wheel has 15/40 on sale in the 20 litre pails for 55 bucks.
If I was to mix 6L's of 10/30 with 8L's of 15/40, would I be asking for trouble???

Sorry guys but why would you do this? Just buy the viscosity that you want .
$ 55 per pail or 75$ for 5/40 100% synthetic chevron per pail.
For $20 your willing to screw with it?

re: PFI572 that's what I was thinking too, especially considering 5w is so much easier on the engine cold starts in the winter

5/40 is a diesel oil, and where would I find it for 75 a pail?

Also..... I'm not willing to screw with it, unless I know it would be OK. Hence the reason of my question!

Says who? Just asking....Ive never had an issue in the 25 yrs I been rolling coal

Same as you as ran the 15/40 rotella for quite a few years.
In the winter below -40 she started plugged In but?
Switched a couple years ago to the chevron and much happier for the cold starts.
Just a option

I purchase at Northern Metalic and I could be getting a deal as know someone there .
Used to buy shell until my bud sold out to Blue wave then moved on.
Find out if you are getting a deal or not? My brother lives in GP and comes to Calgary about every 2 months, he works for Conico Phillips (sp). I might be able to ask him to grab me a pail or 2, the next time he comes here.

Kinda like the octane thing, if I add a little of this and a splash of that will I get 91.7 octane? Read the owners manual, use the correct oil as per the temp range.... pretty basic no? If you want to cheat and run 15w40 year round invest in a oil pan heater. Your engine will thank you. If any of you would like help with this PM me as I am oil infatuated and have personal access to a Mobil tech rep who loves to answer questions.

Just going by experience with my '02 cummins would crank really slow with 15/40 on the cold days but 5/40 it turned over much quicker. So the viscocity of the 15w was obviously thicker on cold starts and I was theorizing it would take that much longer to start circulating throught the motor and lubing things up. I never had a problem with it starting with 15w but it liked the 5w much better on winter cold starts.

edit: now with my Dmax I just run Rotella T6 5/40 year round plus I use it in my Subaru as well. I buy it from Crappy tire when they have it on sale for around $33/5l sales

Yes since I believe you have a 6.0L this is a problem because they use oil pressure to actuate injector cycles, the truck will run like **** until warm.

I see oil mixed up all the time, unless they are vastly different like mixing a PAG with a mineral it probably won't harm anything. Would I do it purpose? Probably not.

What sirkdev said about pan heater. I had to run one with the ford Navistar's as they would start and shut down a couple times with out it when below -40.
No oil pressure to fire injectors. Not good for things.

You are correct.... I have a 05 6.0L With 15/40 she is a hard start in the winter, and that is why I went to a diesel 10/30. But I'm liking the idea of a 5/40
