2 sleds and a deck on a 1/2 ton ?

Hey guys

I'm thinking about downgrading my 1 ton (ram 3500) to a 1/2 ton. Mostly because the payments are too much and its too much truck for what I do.

Does anyone here haul 2 sleds and a deck on the back of their 1/2 ton? I know it's right up there with the GCWR .. say 500 lbs a sled and 200 (?) for an alum deck?

I'll be sure to add airbags, but wanted to get your opinion on how bad the ride is with that much weight on a smaller truck

Not sure which one i'll get but I'm looking at ram 1500, silverado and tundra

Pretty sure you can't legally do that. With gear and people in the truck you will exceed your GVWR quite easily.

I have a ram 1500 and i was going to put a deck on it to haul two sleds, the weight is too much for the truck even with air bags on the truck. I ended up putting the deck on my 2500 ram instead.

If you really want to get a 1500, get a 2 place trailer for cheap, and put a box cover on your truck so that all your gear stays dry.

x2 I went to a 3/4 ton GMC because the 1/2 ton just doesn't cut it safety wise. I put airbags on 92 ford long box and I could carry 2000 lbs but stopping was a new and unique experience. be safe, get a 1/2 and get a trailer.

Ok, Simple math
1/2 ton = 1,120 Lbs

2 people in truck = 350 lbs
fuel = 150 lbs
tools + parts = 100 lbs
Sled deck = 400 lbs
Total =1,000 lbs

Capacity left for two sleds, 120 lbs or 60 lbs per sled.
When you find two sleds weighing 60 lbs each let me know so I can buy some too

yeah and you want to ride one, right I weigh 220 I would crush it like a bug! Sorry back to topic! I think that your math points out a very important detail and its all the stuff you carry that you don't account for.

cargo capacity on a 1500 is about 1620 lbs. still not much room for sleds AND people.

if u search for this topic you'll find a lengthy discussion and dispute over whether it should be / can be done

The guys are right with the math, your going over the limit. If you really want a 1/2 ton though why not look for a 1500HD. I've been in one of those w deck and two sleds, rides good. Would have to ask if it has airbags. Dont know how the numbers would fair out on a setup like that though. Might be able to squeeze within the limit.

I sell sled decks, and have sold a few to 1/2 ton owners. The only reason being is they are hauling ONE machine. I think it's foolhardy to stretch the limits and put 2 machines on a 1/2 ton, the cons far outweigh the pros. If you're gung-ho on a 1/2 ton, you should take White 6's advice and look at an HD, although it would still be very tight. Personally, I wouldn't go with anything less than a 3/4.

Yes well a "1500HD" IS afterall a LD 3/4 ton truck (or in the old days a "heavy half"), still has the heavier suspension and drivetrain, atleast coming from the GM stable anyways. The dodge "1500" megacab is a full blown 3/4 ton.

This true? A 1500 dodge mega AB is that close to a 3/4 ton? I thought shared the same frame/suspension but that's it.

i do it with my f150 with the trailering package, highest gvwr for half ton, i have aproximatly 17-1800 lbs i can put on the back axle. i am at 2250 with4 people in the cab, and my summit 1000 and the wifes rmk 800. air bags would help but still would not get you past the scale guys in bc.

I was raised GM too, (But am partial to Dodge) work on vehicles day in day out...a dodge "1500" megacab is a rebadged hemi 2500 megacab. Had a customer buy a used dodge "1500" megacab, one visit it was a 1/2 ton, and the next visit it was a 3/4 ton. His statement was "Why buy a 3/4 ton when I could buy the same truck rebadged for 5grand less..." LOL But now there is NO megacab (as far as I know) in the 1/2 ton dodge stable!

Dodge just kinda followed GM footsteps with the 1500HD.

Yeah find a hemi 3/4 ton mega and find a 1/2 ton mega, take a look underneath and I couldn't find anything different at all! other than a one instead of a two on the door!! :d
