I believe that singles with snow tires are the best bet.

I guess it would depend on your tire choice. Do you need a duelly to tow with etc.

No I don't really need a dually, as of now I only have a enclosed sled trailer, but my chevy 1500 does not tow it well at all . Iv been looking for a dodge diesel with low km for awhile now and found a really good deal on one, but it just happens to be on a dually. And yes I will defiantly be using winter tires.

On snow and ice as well as mud you are better off with a single rear wheel vehicle even with winter tires. You don't get enough weight/traction per wheel on a dually and thus they tend to spin rather than grab and go. The dually is going to be more stable for towing but as far as traction goes a single rear wheel truck is the way to go.

Yes I could see how adding those extra tires could reduce ground pressure and then not hook up on glare ice. Im looking for the best set up to be safe for mountain highways. Maybe I'll let this deal pass and hold out for a long box srw

I have found them to be better, BUT that is just driving short distances. My experience isnt from actually owning one. Yet.

I love mine, but it's the truck for my needs  They are built to handle weight. So when loaded they're awsome. Not so much when mt. That's where the srw shines, but that's it :( Running winter tires and lower air pressures work well with all applications of truck. Driving habbits are a different story  A duallys footprint is better for stability. There is less sway due to tire roll or being top heavey for that matter. I've owned both and the big D is the one for me. Buy the truck you figure is going to best serve your needs :d Good luck

I love mine even if I did not need a dually any more I think I would have a hard time going back to a single wheel. My mountain trips used to all be with a two place trailer and 2 on the deck, The dually was unbeatable with the weight on the deck, I had tons of traction. I now go with a 4 place behind the dually I do find it to have a bit less traction at times but sure nice to have the heavy truck when pulling the 4 place. In trout lake this winter we chained it up and took one sled out of the trailer and put it on the deck and the truck was just about unstoppable (Key word Just about)

I use a Dodge 3500 diesel with SRW in the Kootenays, Im often on lots a crappy roads for sledding & camping trips. No issues at all with 2 on deck and two or four on trailer. The only time I would prefer a dually is with the camper on and towing the boat in the summer. I see dualies are a bit squirly with out a good load on in the winter, even with good tires. I always bring tire chains, if it gets planted nobody can pull me me out

Well looks like I'm getting the dually. I'm going to get a smaller steel sled deck for it so I could use that or pull my enclosed with out the deck smashing into it. Also going to stuff a small slip tank Under the deck so that will help add traction too . Now just got to find a smaller sled deck or a alum one with a back extension on it that flips over.....hmmm so many posibilitys

sweet dualies look pretty sweet fer sure, especially lifted a bit. sounds like your on the right track with a slip tank and/or steel deck for winter. I love my cummins, just wishin I had found a 6 speed loaded with the goodies. Maybe next time......
