Anyone tow an enclosed sled trailer behind a 5th wheel camper? I'm trying to look at every possible option for this summer. Had originally planned on going the toyhauler route, but it's hard to find one that can haul 2 quads + 2 dirt bikes and still have much camper room left in the trailer without going with a 40+ footer. Thinking maybe a decent sized 5th wheel camper(28ish feet) and a 2 or 3 place enclosed sled trailer towed behind the camper, this way I could still tow the boat behind the camper for fishing trips or the sled trailer for biking trips....and still have a sled trailer for the winter, and just a camper for those other times, kinda cover all the bases. I just can't say I have ever seen it done, maybe it's just a stupid idea, I don't know. Let me know if you've ever seen/done this.

You'll likely be over the legal length limit. Check your provincial regs. Here in Alberta the total length from the front bumper of truck to rear bumper of last trailer cannot exceed 65ft. Also if you want to get technical the second trailer needs to be a single axle.

didn't know about the second trailer having to be a single axle, I pull my tandem axle boat trailer behind my 5th wheel once in a while. with my 3 place Triton enclosed behind my 26' 5th wheel I am over length by about 4 feet.

and Norm, I forgot all about your fox pump until I found it in my toolbox yesterday while looking for a puller.....pm me your addy and I will send it to you asap. sorry 'bout that....

i have seen a 5th with a 14 - to 16 foot encolsed behind it...

in the dirt on the trailers rear door it says caution 80km or trailer sways...

guess what before i passed him down a hill it starts to sway at 80 ish....

i have a c /c long box 1 ton , 33.5 foot fifth wheel , and 14 foot single axle skidoo trailer [ i am 64.5 feet long... ] and after seeing it the open trailer is just fine...

it also depends on how its loaded as far a swaying just like any trailer

I run a 28 ft. fifth wheel with an open two place behind. If loaded properly it pulls like a dream. Will do a buck ten with no issues. See lots of guys with longer loads or tandem axles on the second trailer. I wonder how often that kind of stuff gets checked? Just in case though I carry a copy of the regs with me incase I get some turkey that doesnt know his stuff.

If your caught with an illegal load they will make you unhook right there and then and give you a nice fine. :)

I have numerous customers that use an enclosed trailer behind their Fifth Wheel and love the ability to carry all their toys and have a garage to secure everything while they're away playing or parking for the night.

Attached is a link to the Alberta Transportation website which should answer all your questions. You are permitted 20m or 65' tip to tip length.

Just my .27 cents worth......

I did this for several years, 24' fth wheel and a 22' tandem axle flatdeck.

20m = 65.61'. I was pulled over twice. My combo was 3" under the 65 1/2'.

The other problem is finding a 5th wheel that will accept a hitch....there are lots of 5th wheels with hitches, but I called 12 different manufactures and not one of them reccommend putting a hitch on as there trailers were not engineered to accept a hitch.

It does affect the weight distribution, what I did was to load the fth wheel with as much weight forward as possible and balance the rear trailer with only enough hitch wieght to keep it from wandering.

The first time out I didnt have enough hitch weight on the rear trailer, went to coast down a small incline and as the weight shifted forward the rear trailer started to sway, applying brakes, made it worse, foot to the floor brought the trailers back inline....then I stopped at the top of the hill and shifted some weight forward. Sovled this later with a anti sway bar.

Was in at Scona Spring and spotted a 5th wheel trailer with it's hitch ripped off. Asked about it to find out the owner had installed a rear hitch and was hauling a boat. With very little tongue weight on the 5th wheel hitch it was able to bounce up and down as the trailer hit bumbs. The 5th wheel hitch was engineered for 15,000 lbs towing and 1,500 lbs tongue weight..The guys at Scona said they'd seen some rip the hitch out of the truck as well...

You need to be mindful of the design perameters of the trailers and the hitches used.

I used a 22,000 lb hitch, reinforced the way the hitch was attched to the 5th wheel, raised the 5th wheel 2" and ran 2" heavy wall square tubng right to the back to give the original 2" x 6" tubing frame some support. Added shocks to the suspension on the 5th wheel and the flatdeck was spring susupension as well with shocks. Torsion axles would have been preferend but we take that trailer off road and springs are tougher...

As for length I am allowed 75 ft(in Saskatchewan) but I am only 10 miles from the Alberta border so I should probly stick to alberta regs as I ride at Brule sometimes too. I see all kinds of boats being towed behind, just not much for trailers other than that. This is all good info you guys have posted. Keep it coming because if I can get enough good reasons that this will work good then the boss may just let me do it this way;)

i also find that with the 2nd trailer loaded it tows better [ takes some of the hitch weight off the truck ] ....

Actually my travelaire was one of the few that was designed for it and it did not void the warranty. Too bad they're out of business now lol. :)

Motor home works good to pull an enclosed trailer then you don't have to worry about not being able to go into B.C.

Only went from Edson to Camrose. I couldn't imagine running some of them hills through northern BC with either of those setups. Some of them can be a little hairy at the best of times...

Did you run through BC at night too?

Here's my set-up, just legal by an inch or so......pulls like a dream no wipping motion up hill or down but i'm also not breakiing any speed records when pulling like this. Typically drive at a 100km/hr and let people pass as they wish. Only time i get a bit nervous is stopping when idiots pull in front of you and slam on breaks. Trailer is 34ft and the 2 place is 10ft.
