My dad and I are installing three guages in my truck (Pyro/Exhaust Temp, Trans Temp and Boost)... Has anyone done this? My question is, where in the manifold should the hole be drilled for the Pyro? This is a picture that I found online... Does that look right?

The safe spot is right behind the turbo... But remember ya will be reading approx 300 f lower than the actual temp !... I will send ya pics of mine if ya like.

Please send picks.... The guys at unlimited performance recommend in the manifold, but only said on the drivers side near the back... I guess it must be more acurate... What makes it safer behind the turbo?

Probes have been know to dislodge, burn break, brittle etc...... Then get your Visa out ! :yikes: IMOP. Just remember there is a temp difference & you will be safe.... One would not push her to melt down point anyways ! My add on does not allow me to that anyways ! Hey lets talk thru PM or phone.

Mine is right off the manifold and I think I've burned out the probe, unless you think my truck really idles at 1700 degrees and goes down the highway at 50 degrees.
I would still follow the recomendations and put it close the manifold.

Mines in the manifold too. But then again i own a dodge. But the most accurate reading is from in the manifold.it will vary from 250*F to 400*F for temp difference.

Hey 'Catuki'.... I don't fully understand what you said...... Your probe is in the exhaust manifold, Most accurate reading. Got that part.
The last part bout temps difference. It will vary 250-400 temps from WHERE
?

Well it will vary from going pre turbo and post turbo. your pre turbo reading is the most accurate and the post turbos is one that will be out some. I have 2 egt probe holes for my truck. I have one in the manifold and one in my exhaust brake and with my chip set the same pre turbo i see about 1100*f and post turbo i was seeing around 850*F. about 250*F temp difference. Depending on the truck, it can vary in the temps as i dont know fords or chevys very well.

Thks.... Got it. That's what I said a few posts above ! Kind of thought that what ya was saying, Just wanted to be sure ! Mind is POST TURBO.... I know where I am at for temp with some satisfaction knowing a harpoon will not take out the turbine. :yikes:

O dont worry, i have burried the gauge on my dodge 1600*+ but it was for a quick shot and i wasnt holding it.

What were you doing to get a temp like that...... Yer right it would only have to be a short fast kick in the azz !

We usually put the probe after the turbo, its just safer and less of risk if anything were to break. Like your turbo grenading from a probe piece being thrusted through the pinwheel. :O

I went pre-turbo... Hope that doesn't happen.

It usually doesn't, but we have seen some scenarios where the probe has broke free/melted do to high EGTs. They never caused any real damage, luckily for our customer, but like I said, we do it "just in case".

I talked to a number of different guys... Was told about pre and post turbo. I am happy where it's at. I guess if the guage doesn't seem to be working properly, that may be a warning sign to watch for... Thanks for your input.

For a ford, I don't see the use of these guages....what you could really use is a timer to measure how long till it goes POWWWW!
