Anybody ever change the heater core on their duramax? On the way back from Sled show I started to smell antifreeze in the cab. Took it to dealer today and they said the coolant was too acidic and caused heater core to leak. Long story short, 10 hours labour-$960.00 -whole dash has to come out!
Heater Core -$285.00
Coolant flush -$150.00
Recharge A/C -$100.00
If you guys haven't had your coolant systems flushed, I would strongly recommend it.

Same thing happened to a friend on his 03 8100 1 ton. Only it went from OK to cab full of steam climbing out of Drumheller on a cold winter day.

Hi Extremegriz: What Year Is Your Duramax??? I Just Looked Up Labour Times For An '02 2500hd Chev 6.6l Duramax And Labour Time Should Only Be About 7 Hours + Flush + A/c Recharge..... Not 10 Hours + Flush + Recharge. I Would Get A 2nd Estimate, And Definately Not At A Dealership:(!!! Good Luck And Tell Us How You Made Out With This Venture........ Geeze With The Money You Might Have Saved With Some Preventive Maintenance, You Coulda Spent More At The Sled Show.........lol :d

I have a '03 GMC 2500HD 6.6L. I haven't got the work done yet but they tell me when the electronics are disconnected the truck loses its memory on all things electronic (vent position, temp position etc. )and has to be reprogramed by GM. I know the dealership well so maybe they'll let me tear apart some of the dash myself and save some labour. Yeah I'd rather of spent this money on a sled trailer or perhaps an avy pack.

THAT'S WHY THE "MEMORY SAVER" WAS INVENTED..... STILL DOESN'T EXPLAIN WHY THEY WANT 3 HOURS MORE THAN BOOK TIME..... GOOD LUCK!

Update! Had to go to work so I decided to just get the heatercore done by dealer. Got the truck back and no more leak but now half my dash lights don't work, auto headlights don't come on and the dual climate control doesn't work properly. No heat on the passanger side. I use my truck for work so now I'll have to get it back to them to fix what they screwed up.
If anyone knows might might be wrong with the heat issue, let me know as I'm now 4hrs away from dealer. I will call them tomorrow and let them know what I think of their work.

sounds like they forgot to plug in some connectors they disconnected. I have never worked on those trucks though so I cant be sure.

You were right Lococoin, took the dash apart myself and found a stray plug. Heat works fine now. Dealer will fix or replace the the instrument cluster and also threw in a free Oil Change.
