Dont forget your bug truck shops most of them all sell in bulk and is usually cheaper than you will pay at the pump... Def has a shelf life of 2 years and is garbage after it freezes.. Just a word of warning if someone is pumping for you make sure they put it in the right tank.. Have seen new people fill the fuel tank with def because the caps were side by side and they did not realize what the colors meant.. Huge bill to have everything flushed

So if it freezes once its in your truck it's garbage? Considering DEF will freeze at about -11C I am thinking that most diesels in Canada would have a problem with this in the winter.

Your manufacturer will specify what is approved. According the GM "Use only DEF that is GM approved, or fluid containing the API certified or ISO 22241 label.The use of other fluids could damage the system, requiring costly repairs that will not be covered by the vehicle warranty."

Most DEF you buy in stores will be API certified or ISO 22241 labelled. I have used the Canadian Tire brand and even the Ford brand (buddy did a delete on his and had it left over). I did notice I had way less power with the Ford DEF though...lol.

No it isn't garbage after it freezes. You don't think it freezes in your truck every single night through the winter??? The only reason they heat it is so they can pump it to sell it. Pretty hard to pump it if frozen.

Shelf life of 2 years? Maybe, but if sealed, not sure how it degrades. As long as the ammonia hasn't been allowed to gas off, it is still at the 32.5% and water is water.

We have a tote at the shop and fill at cardlocks when on the road. Don't know that anyone has ever noticed a difference.

We burn a crap ton of def, yes you need the API stuff but honestly haven't seen any that isn't. Never heard of different formulas just branding. Most truck shops and bulk stations are around $1/L plus or minus, why by the jugs for $2/L?

the other trick for trucks that arent moving everyday is not to choke it right full. few buddies that run their dmax's and fords around with 1/2-3/4 tank during the super cold months to help the heater element keep up.

I just bought a 205L barrel for $164 decent price I though. The oil mart fellow said it will store two years easy but to stir it atleast once a year.

Many places it's only about $1.10L in the jug, so for a pickup it's not worth driving to the pumps when you can just buy enough to last a year in one trip.

I was buying mine through work, it was Air One DEF in the 2 Gallon jugs and it was under $10 a jug.

Once this tank of DEF is empty the truck is being deleted.

Eventually I deleted.

Put gas station brand def in mine in golden one winter, like 300km later I got an “incorrect def” message on the dash. Stupid truck knew. But have ran air1 in a pinch other times with no issue.

I was using the jugs ( saving the earth 1 plastic container at a time) and started using the def from the pump at the card lock, no issues and it’s less expensive. On a side note, at work our def is in a tote outside in the sun and we haven’t run in to any issues with it in our big trucks (knock on wood). Now that it’s cooling off the tote will be moving inside the shop.
