RV Bumper Refinish

I had my new hitch installed on the back of the new trailer yesterday. In prep for that the old bolt crap was removed. The previous owner has cut up the chrome cover to accommodate the bolt on unit, so its trash. I am left with some rust pitting on the ends of the bumper.
I would like to fill the pits before it gets painted. Its a pretty small area. I was thinking bondo, but I cant find it in a small cost effective package. Any other ideas?

Crappy Tire should stock some small cans of bondo. Should only cost you a few bucks.

Woh, don’t do that without a few other steps first. Toss up a couple pics and I’ll give you some direction. If you just mud up the pits and paint it, you can expect them to be showing again by spring.

Not trying to discourage you or anything, I just do this stuff for a living. Would hate to see you waste your time/money.

I would just paint it with a textured rock guard coating first then a few coats of paint over top. You will never see those small pits.

Here's some shots of the pits and the bolt gouges.

The trailer has a ladder so some non skid on the one side is a good idea, either in the paint or just tape.

That’s not even that bad. I don’t think you will need filler at all. Clean the whole thing up with a wire wheel (sandblaster would be faster but you might not have one) use an 80 grit flapper to clean up the surfaces on any of the bad areas and put 2 coats of a high fill epoxy primer on it. Sand the epoxy smooth and paint! Cloverdale makes a primer that would be just what you need, and can be sprayed or rolled. Will just require a bit more sanding before paint than if you spray it. Product is called dura-prime. That way it will last. Don’t use a direct to metal paint or rusoleum or anything like that. That or come to lethbridge and I’ll blast it and paint it for ya!

I just used asphalt undercoating on mine. It finishes out in a rough surface and will fill the pin holes. Fades over time, but cheap and easy if you're not after an autobody quality finish.
