Was working with a carpenter that has one pulling a small job trailer and asked him and says good power but worse than his last 6l.

wow, what were you pulling? my 8.1 gets better towing mileage than a 6 litre, lowest I've seen was 5.8 mpg with a GVW of 24,000 lbs from Grande Cache to Fairview. plenty of big hills that route.

Mine was the same. My pops had a 6L and the 8.1 did everything better. Unloaded mileage between the 2 was as close as f*ck is to swearing.

I expected more out of the new 6.6 to be honest, still just a doggy 6.0 to me.

my findings are the same, we both went out to Ritchie Bros in the city to pick up some items we had bought, dad with his 1500HD with the 6 litre and my 2500HD with the 8.1, going out to Nisku I used 1 litre more fuel than he did when we were empty, coming back loaded I used 19 litres less than he did.

Gear ratio is very important with a gas engine .
4:10’s in older trucks make a big difference to the good on fuel economy when pulling .

I had a ram 2500 with the 6.4 hemi, it was really good for driving around town and on the highway, got a decent average of 17L/100. As soon as you put a trailer on, it was brutal on fuel and really struggled on an hill. It had the 3.73 rear end, 4.10 would have been better. When i towed my 11,000b toy hauler it would stay in 4th at 2900 RPM, would average 38L/100. Going to BC up some big hills it would shift all the way to down to 2nd and hold 5200 RPM... and max out at 99L/100. Will never own a HD gas job again. The diesel is a bit more with extra maintenance, but well worth the extra power and ease of use when towing.

Judging by that test GM really needs to get more gears in that trans.

Exactly . The General is always a few years behind .
It’s just weird they didn’t put 10 speed in as they partnered with Ford to build it .

The 6l gas sucks so why 6.6 any better 30hp more ?Haven't heard anything good about the 6.6 gas . The 7.3 ford gas looks like the only gas worth looking at. 6.4 hemi drinks gas like it crazy .Here in b.c u better have lots of power if u plan on towing hills in every direction . I pass gasser like they are parked when towing similar loads. Just dont see why you buy a fancy gas truck for same price as a plain diesel? Each to there own, just get in the slow lane when towing with gas. Get a dirtymax so much better .

Anyone here actually own a 6.6 yet? Narrowed it down between 6.6 gas and 7.3 Ford gas, some decent prices on some holdover GM stuff so thinking about picking up a replacement.

I don’t own one yet but we have a couple of each at work. The gm inside is a nicer truck but needs the 10 speed to compete, I’m sure it will get it for 2021 can’t see why they wouldn’t
Ford is the superior (work) truck but has a 6year old interior.
Ford with the 10speed pulls quite a bit nicer but the gm gets better mileage
When my diesel finally dies I’m going to go with the 7.3 as long as the interior gets the update
