Which half ton to buy?

So - after 15 years driving a SRW F250 or F350 as a daily driver - I am finally going to buy a newer F450 and be done with it for towing the cattle liner and toyhauler.

This leaves a daily driver. Either a F-150 or a (hate to say it) Dodge 1500. I have never owned a Dodge in my life. However - I am impressed with how quite the last one I was in and the UConnect.

It will have to tow a 4 horse aluminum gooseneck horse trailer a few times a year to Ponoka or to Claresholm. No mountains. So I want extendable mirrors. Dodge may win on the air suspension on this one.

I am leaning towards a F-150 with the 3.5L Ecoboost (cause the Ford dealer owes me a couple of favors). But if I get the Dodge guy drunk I am sure I can fan-angle about as good of a deal. Have not driven the Hemi with Etorque yet.

Also have a couple of teenagers who are 6 foot plus and are glued to their phones every trip, so rear seat room and plug ins important.

So let the comments begin.

I should add that I have to park underground downtown. So I am looking at a little smaller than the 2500.

I’m a ford guy and I love my eco boost, I have a 2018 with the tow package 10speed and the big mirrors, I put load leveler bags in the back and it handles great, 12.5L/100. It’s been good so far 40k on it now, but it tends to sit lots as I use my f350 more in the winter for hauling sleds and enclosed.
downsides of the dodge is your ac will only work for a short time lol and the air ride will stop working around December and start again in may. Also uconnect is better known as u cant connect, All my dodge experience is from work trucks we have had on site,
ford downsides, 2015 interior. Rads tend to leak. Some heater cords plug (more so on our 5.0 trucks) back up cam video quality is lacking. Rear breaks in mud wear QUICK, I’m sure there is more that others will add

My brother in-law is not happy with his eco boost towing a small holiday trailer.

Look into apple car play or for Android auto.

I installed a jvc deck with apple car play that replaced my u connect. It’s fantastic.

I think they are options in the new vehicles now.

But they have less power than an eco boost and not any better fuel mileage. And diesel is more money than gas so I don’t see why you would want one.

Ive got a 2016 F150 5.0L 6 speed half ton extended cab 8 ft box, I'm getting 11.6 to 12.4/100L [if I keep my foot out of it]...91,000kms. I've replaced washer pump twice, e brake and rear brakes twice[something seized/freezes up] I use e brake regularly not the cables, and they're sticking again [warranty]. I'm more of a GM guy, couldn't get what I wanted in a GM, so I bought a Ford. I like this one, long wheel base rides nice and pulls great. 5 liter is a proven motor, been around for years.

Two guys at work have the F150's with twin turbo 6 eco boost [a 2016 and 2017], one has replaced a turbo that I know of [2016] and the other guy with the platinum [2017] is ready to burn his, 2 top end rebuilds, 2 timing chains, 3 clutch packs, 3 brake vacuum pumps...less than a 100,000kms on it...should have painted it lemon yellow.

I did a bunch of research before I bought and ended up with a Tundara... Tow capacity is 10,300lbs and the 5.7L has a ton of power. Personally I like the look of the Tundra's over all the rest. I did airbag the back to help with leveling when towing. 525km to 80 liters if I don't drive like an azzhole averages 13.5L / 100km. Towing is much different, tons of power and manages low RPM's but only gets about 350km to a tank.

I drove a 2016 GMC Sierra for a few years and it was a nice truck, AWD system was awesome but it was a 5.3L and didn't tow well, empty the mileage was awesome 700km to 80L.

Nissan Titan is a very capable truck too, only reason I didn't look at them is there are already too many in the family otherwise it would have been my #2 choice.

Resale on both the Tundra & Titan is excellent as well.

For me next year will be a Tundra 5.7 or a 2500 GMC 6.0L,.. gonna use the 'ol 2006 Cummins as a part time hauler.

This is my new Tundra. I bought a used tailgate with camera for the winter months to haul my sled around. Love all the features with the new truck

I'm not going to say the other trucks are crap, they are all crap in my opinion. But I picked up an F-150 Powerstroke 6.5 foot box with tow mirrors. Have 15000km on it. Wife uses it mostly for a grocery getter but I went from SW Sask to North of edmonton pulling a open deck car hauler to grab a 265 Deere Loader for the 4455. Averaged 14.5 L/100 for the whole trip and a 1/3 of it was a 40 mile an hour head wind. Usually gets between 10.5 and 11.5 L/100.

Sync 3 is ok. I still plug my phone in and use Android Auto over the stock GPS. Has an Inverter, USB and standard 12v for charging phones and what not. Mine is just a Lariat so no heated wheel (option) but hast most other stuff. No stock wireless phone charger like the Dodge or GM. Pretty decent leg room. But i think since 17 ford has the same cab for the most part on the 150 and superduty so should be similar to your 450.

Tansmission shifts nice for the most part. It does a weird torque converter shifty lurchey thing at really low speeds every once in a while. Has console Shifter which i don't like, takes up storage room. Has that stupid auto shut off at stop lights thing. Has the small nozzle capless filler for diesel which being a farmer is kind of a thorn in my side. It has Louvers to keep it warm in winter just like our old A Cab Kenworth. Starts pretty good in the cold. The command start app is awsome. Has Locking rear diff. I hate the advanced traction control, It makes it handle worse on gravel IMO. Cab is tight, hardly any dust comes in unlike my 16 superduty with the old cab.
