6.4 vs 5.7 Dodge Engine

What year is your truck? My 16 will get 800 empty highway km any day. On a really good day I have hit 904, but it's not often I'll see north of 850. And that's not on the EVIC, that's distance travelled between fillup. I keep a log for tax purposes. Last trip to Valemount I averaged 15.9 l/100 with sleds on deck. My lifetime average is a bit skewed due to lots of idling, and heavy towing, but it's currently sitting at 20.4l/100km with 125000km on the clock. But that's with ~650 hours of idling, and ~35,000km running over 22,000lbs gcvw, not to mention ~15,000km with two sleds on deck.



It’s a 16. My best tank is under 13L but that was a half tank refill after a relaxing drive through the kootenays.

Like I said I don’t do long empty stretches of just highway driving. I didn’t buy the truck for that.

My lifetime average on my 6.0 2500 gas was 20.5 and 250,000km. Tracked the same way.

I am not here to pull anyones leg, the guy wants to haul sleds 4-5 times a year and couple of cattle drives, that to me doesn't scream you need to have a diesel to make your life better type of use. I think the 6.4 is plenty for most guys.

Is the 6.4l reliability really similar to the 5.7? I know a guy with 220k on his 6.4 and he’s probably done $15k in work. Not hard on his truck either.

If keeping the truck long term is a factor, a quick search on Kijiji won't find very many gas Dodges with 250,000+km on them if any, but a surprising amount of Cummins with that & well over.

Im sure you’re correct, but to be fair, there’s very few gas dodge 3/4 or 1 tons sold. Fleets won’t touch them and private buyers that do either keep them forever or are forced to sell early because of the typical dodge problems

I've had 3 dodge diesels over the years
1998 24v 497,000km
2003 5.9 389,000km
2004 5.9 598,000km

I've put on a few kms to say the least but I also bought them used with a few kms , I stopped buying diesels when I realized the biggest trailer ii ever towed was 18ft and the price of fuel and maintenance was too high , I've dumped thousands and thousands into them trying to justify there worth ......now I drive an 03 2500 Laramie long box hemi 5.7L . I'm not going to win a race , I don't have to worry to find a gas station that sells diesel in a town I'm unfamiliar with , for the price of all 6 injectors I can put a complete hemi into it or a new trans , if it has a catastrophic failure ill just buy another one , my front end is still like new and original @ 190,000kms . sure the diesel power is addicting and the rumble is sweet ..... but the maintenance was brutally expensive , all I've to the hemi is fluid flushes ,filters , brakes , plugs and gas . almost forgot that when u get up to 400,000kms the cummins engine sure runs nice but the rest of the truck is generally beat that's when the wallet starts to open fixing all the little things before they become big.

but hey that's just my opinion , unless ur hauling all the time its not worth it (to me )

Thats true, but how many 1500 Hemi's are there with over 250k?

Do you ever research chit before you speak or do you just pull this stuff out of your a$$? Tons of fleets own dodge 2500/3500 hemi's. A very strong indication would be to look at RB, MA, and Osman market reports.

I had myself convinced to buy a gas 3/4 ton, no matter what make. Was driving a Ram 1500 and priced Ram, GM and Ford. I was pretty specific on what I wanted and all 3 dealers either had to order or transfer in what I wanted. Went option to option as close as possible to keep it fair. In the end, I ended up buying a Duramax for roughly the same money as I got quoted on the 6.4L Ram 2500. The biggest reason I went that way is I'm trading trucks every year to two years and gas 3/4 tons take a major crap kicking in resale. No regrets yet.

Name one. Lots of Fiat gas half tons out there but Very few gas HD pickups compared to ford or GM in fleet use. Fleet managers will tell you that the fiats cost per kilometre is considerably higher and cost recovery at sale is much lower.

Maybe you're driving the wrong brand....! Most diesels do not see any more maintenance than a typical gasser to at least 250,000km. Then the only risk is emissions (then do a delete) or a risk of injectors/fuel pump, etc. Yes these items can be expensive, but many go well beyond 250k before requiring them.

I literally did the exact same thing this summer and found the same. Was dead set on a gas 3/4 ton and after pricing all them out used and new I ended up paying a bit more premium and ended up with a used low miles Duramax. They hold their value way way better than a gas job.

You’re right. The only gas job 3/4 ton dodges seem to be city trucks.
I’ve worked at a few oil companies and only one that had Dodges. They learned their lesson and moved to Fords. Dodges were too expensive to maintain.

The 6.4 l works great, good power but ya its thirsty, Ive never owned one but my dad had one of them and Ive driven it lots to the mountains as he prefers to chill as passenger lol. He had a 15 3500 laramie with the 6.4 and that thing got about 15-16 l/100 km empty and about 22-24l/100km with sleds on the deck. Hooked up to the 4 place it was in the 30+l/100km range........ gross mileage. I kind of wanted one until I seen the mileage first hand and chose diesel in the end. ya its more per liter for diesel but burns way less so im still ahead with the diesel. I just bought a 2018 ram 3500 limited diesel and Im getting great mileage, just drove empty to calgary and back and got 11.4l/100km, first trip to the mountains I got 16.8l/100km with 2 sleds up on the deck towing a 2 place open deck trailer, that was the average with idling etc. Im guessing im in the 900+ km range empty which is 200 km more than my 13 half ton hemi empty so im very happy with that

Its actually kind of funny that you mentioned that, my coworker bought a 2015 ram 1500 from the last Ritchie sale over the internet. He goes to pick it up and it won’t run. Turns out it was a Thompson truck with 74000 km and the engine was toast. Dispute resolution and he got his money back as it turns out truck was not properly represented.

Turns out it was a Thompson truck with 74000 km and the engine was toast. Dispute resolution and he got his money back as it turns out truck was not properly represented.

Thompson beats the hell out of them and doesn’t know what maintaince is, but can’t blame the truck for that. I wouldn’t buy anything they owned regardless of brand.

Thats true, but how many 1500 Hemi's are there with over 250k?

My 1500 has been worked harder and towed more than the average half ton, and with 189,000 kms on it now, the motor has had oil changes, one radiator coolant drain and refill, new spark plugs, and nothing else. Tires changed twice, brakes once, transmission fluid change once, differential fluids and transfer case fluid changed once.
Actual failures that have occured, one headlight bulb, but i changed both. Center brake light bulb burnt out and replaced. A backup sensor failed and I replaced it. Best truck I've ever owned, and i have had several brands over the years. Worst truck was a gmc with the forever problem plagued 5.3 that was rebuilt twice in 107,000 kms.

In my company I primarily run Ram 2500 5.7 and 6.4 Hemi's, all have been reliable, great trucks. We have a few Power Wagons, I like them, softer ride, they come 4:10 gears, 6.4 and a bunch of other bells and whistles that cant be had unless they are PW's.
The 6.4 has a bit more torque then a 5.7, not a huge difference but noticeable, fuel economy is close to the same between them.
I have towed a 42' 5th wheel with a 6.4, and it did well, (HW 12 between Bentley and Rocky have some pretty big hills and I can maintain a speed pulling those hills)
