I know this diiscussion has happened before but... I'm looking to switch up my tow rig for the seaon. Currently running a tacoma with a 2 place and does the trick but in crappy weather definitely can be under powered. Debating a 3/4 ton with a deck. Should I go diesel or gas? Factors to consider I live in Calgary and this will be my daily driver, I have a limited budget about 24k, I know absolutely nothing about diesel trucks, I never tow anything, and typical get out 2 weekends a month, usually within 3 hours on occassion 6. What do other similar gas rigs get running to the mountains (with deck and sleds), I was leaning towards diesel but can't find a decent one in my budget, so am back to gas. Thanks

All depends what you want and what your daily commute is.
I have a 3500 gas job.
Love it
But there are times I wish I had a diesel.

You got a better one? Post it up.

No, but that is very overpriced and a lifted truck with that kind of km? Run far away.

Speaking of that run far far away from those little lots like that. 99.99% of them are nothing but a bunch of scammers who buy junk from auctions paint it up and rip people off who have no idea SO badly. If you want to roll the dice on a truck like that, just go straight to the auction yourself, at least if you get burned you paid a ton less for it and have money to put into repairs.

JFK are those expensive though. About 8 years ago I sold my 07 Ram 2500 CTD Laramie with 80km on it for $30k...... The same truck is worth more then that now. I can't even imagine buying a 10 year old beat up truck with 200-250km on it for $25k. A brand new truck at $50-55k is a million times better move.

So you cant find a better deal on Kijji then? didn't think so. Id never buy from an auction, I buy new chit. But you aren't going to get a new diesel for 24,000$ (polaris chicks budget)

And 55 for a new one? its going to have no options at all, probably doesn't even come with tires LMAO

He said his budget was 25k, so for over double his budget he can find something, great advice. For 25 u can find a decent non abused diesel but they go quick that market is huge. Just have to watch kijiji on the regular and ya pretty hard to find a new diesel for 55 with a box on it and any options if your into the 60s can find some decent non currents

Tundra too small not enough payload for a deck and 2 sleds. Don't really feel like selling my current to still be stuck with a trailer.

RXN how much you spend in gas with a deck for a weekend?

for what you have described go gas. You will get a better base vehicle to start with at that budget, go with a 3/4 ton and as low of mileage as possible. Cheaper for you to maintain and will serve your needs. If your adverse to towing and have a budget, go gas.

I dont have a deck.
My two options are
One sled in the box. Which is great fuel mileage. (Well good enough for me). About 18mpg. So a trip from my place to McBride and back is couple hundred bucks. My tank is 137lts.
My other option, this is when I wish I went diesel. Is when I tow my 28ft inclosed trailer. To McBride and back cost double as if I was empty. Split 4 ways is about $110/person.

I'll sit around 100kms while towing just to keep fuel milage. And climbing hills I find she has to drink to make it. And i need a long passing lane for overtaking anyone.

Gonna be tough to find a decent truck for a reasonable price in Alberta these days as they’re all heading to the states. I’d stay away from any older Fiat product unless it’s below 100k km. Decent engine, but the rest of the truck is junk. The driving force occasionally has lease returns online for reasonable prices, but you’ve gotta act fast as the brokers snap them up when they appear. The sad truth is that $25k doesn’t buy you much in a 3/4 or one ton anymore.

My Fiat is junk. 130k on it and I have done........absolutely nothing but regular maintaince on it! And I abuse the hell out of it, i've towed 27k with it numerous times, and regularly tow over 20k. If I had a complaint, it's that the rear springs are getting a bit soft since it's regularly at, or over max weight on rear end. I can name many more. My dads 04 is about to hit 500k, had it since 200k and haven't done anything other then the expected wear parts.

Although I will agree $25k doesn't buy much for a diesel. Either go gas, or up the budget.

Thing is neither of those trucks are worth buying, extremely likely to be money pits. Either up the budget, or go gas. You can buy a 07-09 with 200kmish diesel for under $20k all day long though....

55k will get you a truck with sticker of low 70's which is a decently equipped truck. The difference is, 5 years down the road it's worth something, those trucks won't be worth a dime in 5 more years.

The used diesel pickup market is doomed for a massive correction once the US buyers flood stops, if the dollar goes up it will be a massive shock to many.

I've seen those trucks with 500,000+ km on them and still going strong. (And so have you,,,, you said your dad got one with 200k and now had 500k, but this one is a money pit apparently ? lol) I wouldn't be scared of one with 200k. Might need a couple things then it could last another 10 years easy.

And show me a 09 with 200k for under 20 please(advertised online). Could be out there? I haven't seen it though. Mind you im not really looking that hard for an 09...

And good luck on the 55 for a new diesel.

I agree dodge makes a good truck though.

I see many tractor trailers hauling trucks passing through Sparwood on their way to the states every day.
