Thing is neither of those trucks are worth buying, extremely likely to be money pits. Either up the budget, or go gas. You can buy a 07-09 with 200kmish diesel for under $20k all day long though....

55k will get you a truck with sticker of low 70's which is a decently equipped truck. The difference is, 5 years down the road it's worth something, those trucks won't be worth a dime in 5 more years.

The used diesel pickup market is doomed for a massive correction once the US buyers flood stops, if the dollar goes up it will be a massive shock to many.
Very very rare to find one loaded 07-10 for less than 25-30g, and plain one for 25

My loaded 08 I bought from my work was going to be 26 on the lot and probably 24 lowest sell price

I bought it for 12200.00 before it went into shop and that's what they had into it, needed some work but fairly easy stuff that took me a Saturday to fix, but was about 5000 if the hole list was done and fixed for lot sale

My F350 (4x4 long box extended cab) gas job (6.2l) has 148,000 on it and still gets the same mileage whether one sled or two. 18-20 l/100km and that is with an aluminum flat deck. I pull a heavy holiday trailer (4 season) and mileage can be in the 28-32 l/100km depending on where I am driving. Trip to Vancouver is expensive and there are times I wished I had a diesel but then I think of the cost of maintenance and I am quite content.

For daily driving, I am in the 14-16 l/100km range on the highway. If you drive with a heavy foot, the mileage can be much worse.

Had a few of both , and no idea why guys keep talking about all the extra cost of owning a diesel. I believe it's mainly to justify their personal decision and that's fine. If you're never gonna haul or pull anything , you bet, the gasser makes sense. My wife has the 5.3 in a half ton and it's great for travelling , great on fuel, quiet , and an absolute PITA if you have to pull anything. I'm always pulling something , a couple boats , hauling a camper, Utv on a trailer, sled camp, 5 th wheel, couple sleds on a deck, whatever. And almost all of those times, I'm recreating, and those are my favourite times, better than work . And the diesel, just makes those times more enjoyable, the ease of pulling without screaming rpm's , feeling sympathy for the motor, and watching the constant shifting up and down and watching the fuel gauge drop drastically help make it that way. Just my opinion, if you're gonna spend lots of time recreating , and most often it involves pulling or hauling something , a long box diesel just makes way more sense. If you need a vehicle daily to park downtown or do stop and start small deliveries , or drive to school every day, buy a cheap small second vehicle for those duties. But I keep my truck serviced well, don't do my own , have had same truck in gas , and other than the initial cost, I don't see the extra maintenance excuse. They're kinda stinky, bit louder, usually bigger and longer and a pain in tight spaces, but in my mind , worth it if you are gonna most often use it as a truck.
Oh , and good morning !!

Maybe to think outside the box.. Get a F150 with the heaviest payload and put airbags on it. I know this is debated heavily but I think with a aluminum deck and 2 seds, 2 people and gear you can stay within the rated capacity. (maybe read "sled deck on a 1/2 tonne" if you have the patience. You will buy a much newer truck than going 3/4 tonne and especially vs. diesel. The 5L motor gets really good millage and carries 2 sleds well. I don't think the GM half tonnes come close to the ford payload. Maybe a GM guy can correct me if I'm wrong. It's also much nicer to drive around the city in a half tonne. Parking for meetings downtown with the F350 sucks. That's probably what I would do if I couldn't run my diesel truck through my company.

I own a diesel and my two previous heavy duty trucks were gas. If I hadn't gotten a new larger trailer I likely would have stayed with a gas but the fuel economy was killing me towing the trailer during the summer. Owning a diesel is a bit of a luxury in some ways. It costs more up front but do hold their value. Out of warranty repair costs can be high where modern gas motors typically are cheaper to repair depending on the part.

Mine is a daily driver but my commute is 45km each way on highways so it eases the pain of sitting around in traffic. I park inside so there is no major warm up time in the mornings, and remote start it prior to leaving work. Maintenance costs can be higher on diesels given the extra fuel filters if you have more than one, added oil capacity and so on.

Honestly, I doubt I would ever own anything but a diesel now having owned one and the majority of people who own one would agree but %99 of us could likely get away with a HD gas truck. The new Ford's have been decent, the new Ram with the 6.4 is a great motor and I know a few people with them. The GM 6.0 gas engine hasn't changed really since 1999 in the HD trucks.

The truck needs to suit your lifestyle as well. Riding around in a 3500 can sometimes be a little rough for your passengers. My dogs bounce around in the back seat from time to time. I do not have a second vehicle so it needs to be something that makes sense 365 days a year for me.

I think you would be more than happy with most modern gas HD trucks. A quick search on kijiji for gas HD trucks 2012 and newer under $250000 shows about 25 different trucks. https://www.kijiji.ca/b-cars-trucks...700199a138a166a54a1000054a68a49?price=__25000

Obviously not all of them are suitable but something like this https://www.kijiji.ca/v-cars-trucks...ra/1371563843?enableSearchNavigationFlag=true

or

https://www.kijiji.ca/v-cars-trucks...xm/1375390669?enableSearchNavigationFlag=true

are good gas options and likely give you some conveniences.

This is more for informational sake and my curiosity; everyone is saying $25k isnt enough for a decent used diesel so up the OPs budget and then it jumps to telling how much new ones cost. What is a reasonable budget for a solid used diesel?

Factors to consider I live in Calgary and this will be my daily driver

How far is your daily commute? Diesels take considerably longer than gas to warm up in the winter. Might not seem like a big deal, but if you have a short commute its a PITA and hard on the truck if it rarely gets to operating temperature.

Everyone has a different budget. The ask price for 10-12 year old diesels is out to lunch. Why does a 12 year old miled out LBZ get $20000+, because someone is willing to pay it (original list for those trucks was $29000-$39000 depending on trim). In our market with 0% financing on many new trucks, guys trade their used ones in and most of those trade in's get sent South of the border because of the inventory demands down there, that is now creating inventory demands here. If you want to see ridiculous prices, look at diesel sellers in the US. I can get more for my 2 year old truck than I paid with the exchange.

So whats a reasonable budget? It depends on your wants and needs. Want something with warranty, $50k +, want something with minimal emissions but likely high mileage, $20k+. Used diesel deals do come up from time to time for a fair value, but a $10,000 06-07 Duramax last all of 5 minutes on any buy and sell page. If you don't have cash in hand or are not willing to e transfer asking price site unseen its hard to find one of those deals.

Um maybe in American dollars. My loaded ‘07 LT was $64000 on the window sticker and I believe I paid $59 000. At 0% financing too. FWIW when I traded it in last year with 220 000km they gave me $22 000 for it.

LBZ was the last year before dpf emissions, the last model of the classic body style, and also the last engine paired with a ZF6 trans. They are desirable for these reasons among others. That’s why it’s called LBZ tax when you see the prices on them lol.

It’s weird the way some vehicles hold their value like the last couple years of the 7.3 powerstroke and the 12v Cummins trucks but there are reasons for it-they were good trucks!!!

I just sold my 2005 LLY for $25k in under 24 hours. I only had 134000 km on it and it was in really good shape so I though it should get a premium price. I posted it on kijiji and had about 25 guys call/email/text about it within a few hours. A few of the really serious buyers making full price offers before they even seen it. I couldn't believe how much interest I had in a 13 year old truck for the price I listed it for. I think I probably could of got more for it if I wanted to.

So there is definitely demand for the older Duramax diesels.

In August I paid $37k for 2010 Dmax with 59,000 km’s mint LT leather... I think it was a great price.
At the time I could have bought some 04-07 dodges for $25k, but good luck finding a dmax.
