Hey guys got stopped through a checkstop I was just wondering, I had my 5th wheel hooked up to my 3/4 ton truck and I had my small aluminum 12ft fishing boat behind it, the peace officer said I must have brakes on my single axle boat trailer, now I’ve never heard of this before but any one have insight on this, like wouldn’t I need two brake controllers in my truck as per each trailer!? I’ve b trained lots before but this is the first time I’ve heard of this thanks fellas

Well if depending on weight not sure

But most brake controller can do 2-4 axles, so as long as yours does 3 axles your set

Ya well I just have the stock built in controller in my ford, but it’s a 12ft tin tub on a
single axle boat trailer not much weight as I can hand bomb it and pull it with my quad

Mabe biggest thing is a battery and break away cable with axle brakes

So if it goes for its own ride it's not a free for all

Boat trailers generally don't use electric brakes. They use surge brakes, therefore do not need a controller.

uhhh backing in a boat with surge brakes gives me nightmares... lose that lockout pin and you're in for frustration

Be the day I put brakes on my boat trailers, I'm pulling a 21ft 5th wheel and a 12ft tin tub that my garden tractor pulls

Tire on a 12ft boat trailer would have a short life with brakes. Would think it would lock up everytime

Pulling a little tinner, brakes are not required:

When are Brakes Required on Trailers

• If the trailer has a gross laden weight more than 910 kg
• If the trailer weighs 50 per cent or more of the towing vehicle

So what if I had two sleds in the boat and was pulling it with a dodge eco diesel with airbags, 13" of lift and 38" Mickey Thompson super swampers? Can I still do it without brakes?

it does say in there that the lead trailer becomes the towing vehicle, So then I would read the these two statements JMO in the way I read that document. So is your second trailer more than 910KG, and/or weighs more than 50% of your 5th wheel?
