Hi Peoples,

So I just bought a 1999 dodge 3500 5.9cummins, its all stock. I am going to upgrade the lift pump and the transmission so I can make some power with it I am going to use only in the summer to haul my camper and boat. What aftermarket parts are the ticket for this old pick-up?

Hard to beat the Fast fuel systems. Or BD diesel has some nice lift pumps. Bottom sumps are nice. Not sure of any trans guys in your area but if you drive to Edmonton area there’s a shop in Acheson that awesome at building them. His shop is call Icon or Iconic drive line.

I had a 98.5 24v it had the Banks big power bundle on it, it was turbo compressor, cold air intake, air intake horn, full exhaust and chip and that truck pulled! Is banks still around?

Glacier big line kit with or without stock pump relocation
RV275 injectors, cheap and pull decent
I used an Edge comp, easy to adjust power
Adjustable boost elbow
Gauges

Any more you will be sinking big money into the transmission, a decent valve body would probably help.

sold mine a few years ago, still miss it sometimes. I thought you were all about the gas dually?

any intake, BHAF is cheapest and filters well.
upgraded lift pump I used the FASS but had to replace a bad one once.
4" turbo back with hushpower muffler
edge juice w/attitude makes a bit less power than the comp but I liked having the integrated gauges and being able to set the backdowns was nice for those times you get a bit carried away on the hills.
boost elbow came with the edge box
DDP 125hp injectors made a ton of power and were pretty clean all things considered
I had a stick but the auto is a lot more forgiving with a bigger charger. I had a 60mm but was after a 62 before I sold it. Probably no more than a 64mm inducer if it's getting worked.

Trans pick your poison, tons of snake oil salesman when it comes to diesel transmissions, especially the 47re.

How sure are you the truck is all stock? From the photo it appears to have aftermarket dual exhaust so I'd be surprised if it wasn't otherwise tinkered with.

Watch the rust on bottom inside of the doors that's how mine started and got out of control.

They are great trucks I had an '01 for 10 years with just RV275 injectors and an Edge timing box. All I did for fuel mods was upgraded the line size to remove some restriction and periodically checked the lift pump pressure.

If it's still got the stock (original) injection pump set aside a grand if you use a wire tap box though, it will die. Mine toasted on the first big pull. Updated later pumps could handle wire tap boxes better. It will pull good with just RV275's and something like and Edge EZ though.

Save some money for a neck and back brace or suspension seats. Worst riding trucks of all time. I almost bought one years and years ago. Even with the weight of a diesel it road like sh!t. We took it for an hour test drive and the wife and I both had a nasty headache when we gave the truck back and walked away.

My gas pot is great but when loaded heavy, camper and pulling boat fuel range becomes and issue unfortunately and this is where the diesel shines. This truck being a older emissions free truck is what sucked me in. The prices on new trucks is insane and I only haul the camper and boat a dozen times a year. So I will stick the camper on it and leave it there.

When I went to Whitehorse last summer I barely made fuel stops, and one day I had a terrible headwind and killed a tank of gas in 390kms!!! The gas truck haulls awesome but it is thirsty.

Thanks for the info.

She is no powerhouse lol, it does have a 4" BD exhaust and it looks really new. The air cleaner is stock, lift pump stock, no boxes plugged in. The truck was on Van Island and pulled a 5th wheel. An old dude owned it. It was to the dealer for service every year of its life.

All the higher HP boxes like the Edge Comps etc. need to intercept the signal going to the VP44 injection pump. Unfortunately many of the 98.5 to 2000 pumps weren't as good as they could have been. When you stress them to deliver the extra fuel, they pile up. The lower HP boxes like the Edge EZ don't tap into the harness and fry the pumps. Like I mentioned, an Edge EZ and RV275 injectors makes a decent pulling combo.

I will need to add a leaf in the rear to handle my camper, it 4700lbs loaded up

Before i would do anything with that i would confirm the GVW. 4700lbs seems high for todays truck. My F350 has a payload of about 2,000lbs, your more then doubling it.
You cannot just add springs and call it good, it doesn't work that way. DOT goes by your GVW engineered factory spec's on the door of the truck.

2000lbs for a f350 sounds low. My last dodge was 4200. My new truck is around there too but I’d have to check again for exact numbers.

To figure out your pay load(carrying capacity)you have to subtract your Truck weight empty no driver or passenger from the GVW.
There are no pickups that will legally carry 4,000lbs.
my camper scales at 1750lbs, once loaded i’m borderline legal.
