Loved my 98 -5.9 12valve with a big stick cam and a 5 speed but pulling it is not even in the same country as my 14- 6.7 cummins with the automatic. Both are good on fuel especially loaded up pulling. Not huge on the after treatment system on the 14 gut no issues as of yet. Both of mine have been 3500 4x4 dually and both ride better than the 3500 single rear wheel trucks.

I made a math erroe on my camper....its around 4k loaded...My ford is good for 3700lbs so I am over a little. When I have my camper on I am on vacay and in no rush. My truck doesn't feel unsafe at all. When I see these same campers on a 3/4ton I cringe.

Before i would do anything with that i would confirm the GVW. 4700lbs seems high for todays truck. My F350 has a payload of about 2,000lbs, your more then doubling it.
You cannot just add springs and call it good, it doesn't work that way. DOT goes by your GVW engineered factory spec's on the door of the truck.

2000 lbs...???

My 2011 HD F150 has a 2,708 lb payload.

I checked the door tag and the 3500 dodge is good for 7000lbs on the rear axle, the dana 80 can take 11000lbs...I will be over but not by much

The trucks GVWR is 9900lbs, the truck sits on the scale at 7800lbs, giving it a 2100lb payload.

Hahaha no wonder DOT is having such a hay day with trucks with sled deck hauling trailer's with 4 big dudes in them.
People don't know how to figure out their carrying capacity.

Most new 3/4 tons have 10’000 lbs GVWR and new 1 tons single rear wheel with 11000 lbs GVWR. Rated to haul close 4000lbs in the box.

Your ford is comparably to 3/4 ton in GVWR.

If this comment was meant for me...well...GVWR is 8200 lbs.

At government scale with 190 lb driver and a full 136 litre tank of fuel the truck is 5600 lb.

That leaves room for an additional 2600 lb payload...assuming I don’t overload any of the two axle weight ratings.

Hi Peoples,

So I just bought a 1999 dodge 3500 5.9cummins, its all stock. I am going to upgrade the lift pump and the transmission so I can make some power with it I am going to use only in the summer to haul my camper and boat. What aftermarket parts are the ticket for this old pick-up?

The FASS fuel system helps with mileage,power and reliability. If I were to have an automatic rebuilt it would be A&C transmission in Winterburn (west end of Edmonton). I would stay away from fuel controllers for those pumps as they are pricey. With the larger exhaust I would look at ensuring enough air flow and call it good. If you do the FASS ,intake and trans your wallet will be alot lighter. You can save some cash if you remove and install the trans your self.
