I think a lot of these new truck with the 8 speed transmissions and stuff have real low speed rear ends. Like 4:35 and stuff like that.
I was thinking that too but the first and final gears are very similar ratios.

I figured they would put taller rear ends in with more gear options

F-350
3:55, 4:10,4:30

F-450
4:30

With a diesel I just can’t understand why Ford puts such low gearing in the 450,550 trucks ?
4:10 would be the absolute lowest I would go .
Gas engine is completely different and is okay with low gearing as motor needs RPM.
Single rear wheel 350 it would be 3:73 ratio in diesel at the lowest if running stock size rubber .

Yeah I really want the F450 over the f350 but I really don't want that 4:30 rear end, wonder if a guy could just swap out for 3:55 or 3:31 ?

probably because 550''s got no ball's and need the low gearing.

Reason they have no balls is they aren’t in the torque ban and reving to high ? IMO
Dodge is the same if not worse as the inline likes to pull but at lower RPMS.
Drove my buddies 5500 dodge and nice truck terrible for power as reving to high .

get that one then, cause the 550 blows goats
Alot of those f550 come with a 4:88 rear end doesn't harness any of the engines torque imo.

The ford cannot get the GVW rating for service truck applications in the 450/550 without the 4.88 gear set.
You can get a 450 with 17” rims. It looks like a 350 but its labeled a 450.

The rams GVW remains the same no matter what rear end was spec’ed. The 2017 5500 ram, we ordered it with the 4.30.
Truck for truck the ford was way more expensive to purchase as well.

they have no torque. just about got stuck in 2 inches of mud lmao

push and hold traction control button for about 7-8 secs it helps take some traction limits off. 550’s are derated due to the fact that if you loaded to max GVW and put a retard behind the wheel he would burn it up. Just Ford protecting there warranty claims.

lucky for me I don't have to drive it. the time I did I wasn't impressed.

definitely was made so retards don't wreck the company truck.

for sledding aplications I'd stay with a srw 1 ton for sure.

Dodge has three different rear end choices in them though, makes a massive difference for towing heavy. And cab and chassis are derated for longer life. A 3500 is only rated to tow max for part of its life while 4500/5500 rated to tow max 100% of the time. Empty they are slower, but hook 30,000 to them and the 5500 is way faster.

I have a SRW 3500. For the 10 trips a year towing to camp it is ok.
Yes a DRW would be great to tow with. Also be a tight fit in the single door of the garage to park each day.

I will consider DRW on my next truck.

There you go.

1. It fits in the garage way easier than expected
2. Tow capacity way over what my trailer weights
3. Towing test done, I was surprised how much easier it was to drive towing on QE2, for sway and also power wise.
4. Need to retro fit current chains or buy some.

5. Ok experts,,,What wheels do I chain up, I know I will get stuck

Thanks
