Starting to look for my next set of winter tires and wondering what other’s experiences have been for a one ton diesel? I currently have the Toyo CT’s studded and like them in snow but found them just ok on ice. Maybe they just need more syping? Also interested in getting decent longevity. So far I’ve got about 40K km’s on mine. Need a E rated tire. Thanks!

In them hills.
I have been running hakaplida factory studs for 3 winters now pulling a 30ft enclosed.

They are really good on the ice but leave little to be desired in the staging areas when there is 1ft of fresh. Or on logging roads. But I guess that is what chains are for.

50% left on the tires treadwise.
Estimated 40k km.
50% of the studs left too.

Next set will probably be either the nitto exo grappler or the duratrac with additional aftermarket siping.
Maybe studs.......

I'm running Hercules avalanche tires with studs. 2017 superduty snow tires. Total winter performance.

Cooper discovery winters with studs, I've had them for 4 winters now and will probably get another year. Tons of tread and they work great.
X2 bought a set with studs at beginning of season and no complaints yet

That’s interesting... the guy I was buying from told me NOT to put the Hakkapeliitta on the truck. I wanted to use these tires for the truck as we have them on the SUV and they’re a fantastic tire. But this sales guy was adamant they are not the best choice for a HD Pickup, and steered me away. I didn’t do a tonne of research at the time - just trusted him and went another direction (General) which has been great too.
He is probably correct.
Good tire, as far as icy roads go.
But probably not the the best well rounded winter tire.

I'm running a set of Cooper ST Maxx with studs for winter tires and I'm very impressed with them so far. One of the best tires I've run in the winter yet. Even a guy with me yesterday commented on how well they gripped the road while running some backroads heading sledding. That being said I've never run a dedicated winter tire.

Here is a brand-new set vs a set at 50% wear.

Notice how the center is all one piece now.

Been running studded duratracs on the gm3500 this winter and now running studded m55's on the f350. They all suck on ice but I prefer the 10ply duractracs I think so far.

Fawk that’s out of control. I assume that’s the Nokian’s?

Is that the tires or are there suspension/camber/alignment issues there?
Just tires, they wear evenly from side to side, it's just at 50% alot of surface area shows up an not many sipes left. Performance is fading fast.

it really looks like the tire wear is over inflation... I would suggest dropping the tire pressures to 45psi... Your probably running at least 60psi, right? If you drop the pressures to 40 - 45psi, it will help with the middle tread tire wear, unless you've got a load, then you have to pump them back up.

The TOYO AT’s seem to do the same no matter air pressures.
Middle looks smooth and wore out at 50%

Truck doesn't move unless the sled trailer is attached.

Tires are inflated as per manufacturers specifications.

Measured off the new set and they are wearing evenly.

Just the way they are designed I guess.
Great hwy/city tire for the first 50%.

But for $2800 I expect more.

I'm running Firestone Winterforce LT's (studded) on my 1 ton Dodge diesel. 5th winter on these, used them on two previous trucks. Always hauling or towing heavy loads, probably have about 40-45000 km on them with at least 50% tread left. They work well on ice, not the greatest east in heavy loose snow pulling the enclosed up a trail, that's when the chains go on. But they are a far better tire then the studded Hankook iPikes or Duratracs I ran previously...
