Anyone have any real world experience with the gm 6.2 max tow equipped half ton Vs the 2500 6.0. How would they compare both pulling 10,000 lbs. Air bags if needed on the half ton. I don’t buy the 3/4 ton has bigger brakes rear end etc. Half ton has great brakes and adequate rear. I’m almost thinking the half ton would out tow the 2500 in this equation. 6.0 is proven work horse in terms of reliability but 6.2 has great torque curve and trans.

Anyone towed with with both? Talking the new direct injection Gen motor of the 6.2

Both trucks would be legal in terms of weight and payload.

Had a ‘16 6.2 with the max tow pkg, was a company truck so not sure what it had for diff’s. I regularily towed enclosed trailers with it weighing 6000-9000lbs. The truck seemed to handle it fine but the 6.2 definitely has a much higher torque curve than a 6.0, yes it has oodles if HP and does make torque but from real world experience it likes to be at 3 grand plus before you can get any power out of it, just Rollin on flat pavement it wouldn’t get into o/d. Have had many 6.0’s with 4:10’s pull the same trailers and not rev nearly as high. The 6.2 is a superior engine but there’s a reason they won’t put it in a 3/4 or 1 ton, it’s a high revving corvette motor that they somewhat converted to accommodate the luxury pickups, that’s why they are so hard to find in a normal truck, most are Denali or bag loaded (hi country in chev)

Ya you need to have the truck loaded before you’re even able to add the $3k 6.2l option
I would hate to have the truck loaded with that much trailer weight in a crosswind.
I have a 6.2l 8 speed, power isn’t in issue, but it’s still a 1/2 ton body

I have a couple 1500's with the 6.2L. One has the 8 spd with max tow pkg and the other 2011 with the 6 spd and no max tow...the old one has been a great unit currently with 410,000 kms.

Max tow gives you a 3:42 rear end. I pull a 3 place MTI enclosed of which it handles very nicely. My newer 6.2L is capable of around 12L/100km (or a bit less)empty, jumps up to around 22-25L/100km with 3 sleds and all the gear.

I have pulled a couple 10,000 lb loads with my older 2011.....it handled it but I wouldn't recommend it as a regular set up. I think the 6.0L workhorse with the 4.10's would be a better choice

Used to be but probably changed when 8 speed came out?
Could only get 17 inch wheels with tow max as well a few years back.
Thx

3:73 is not even an option on the 1500. standard is 3:08, optional 3:23 and 3:42. as soon as you choose the max tow, 3:42 is selected

At one time it was an option. My 2013 6.2L with max tow has 3.73. That alone is the reason I have not upgraded to a new truck as they no longer offer that gear ratio.

That is the benefit (or hindrance) of the 2500....3:73 is standard and 4:10 optional
Is a 3.73 available with the 6.0 in a 2500? I know years ago when I sold GM it was 4.10 only with the 6.0, with no option. Similar to how the DirtyMax only came with 3.73.

I have had two 2500's with 6.0 and both 4.10, drove a 3.73 before getting the second 2500 and I found it didn't hold a gear as well and was gear hunting a lot more. That was empty so I figured stick with the 4.10.

This was fine for sled deck use and small trailer towing. Then going to a medium trailer with more wind load and the 350 km range on a 90L tank, no thank you. The older trucks had I believe 130L tanks, the newer ones 90, not sure in recent years if they have added options or gone back to larger ones. The 6.2's if you don't require a heavy truck tow great. As far as actual towing ability, the 6.0 is like any other gasser, tows great, simply motor, very reliable.

In the past I went from a 6.0 1500 to a 2500 6.0. Not exactly what you're looking at but this is my thoughts. This is towing a 24ft enclosed. The 1500 had more get up and go, could hold speed with less effort, burned less fuel. That's the only things it had over the 2500. The bigger truck was a lot more stable hauling the trailer through hard winds or over mountain roads. Yes it did brake easier. Also couldn't pass a fuel station it seemed. That being said if I was going to get a gasser and tow more than 5k pounds I would get the 25/3500 without a doubt. The extra stability from the heavier truck is huge. Never would I ever consider hauling 10k on a half ton. Yea sure they're "rated" for it but that's a lot of weight on a grocery getter IMO and not something I'd run

I think it's insane. Watching these folks pulling trailers with their bumpers damn near scraping the ground just blows my mind. The trucks just aren't heavy enough.

I think wind resistance is very important too, when comparing 1/2 ton to 3/4 ton. Also brand, Dodge 1500’s don’t handle load near as good as chev half tons, comparing my old 10 hemi to 15 6.2 gm...

I would look at Ram's HD 6.4 over the 6.0 if GM isn't your only choice. I was impressed with a buddies and fuel economy isn't that much less with two sleds and really diesel vs gas prices in winter its almost a wash. I know a few people on here like the Ford 6.2 as well but a few of our work trucks have them and they just seem like any other Ford.

So pull that couple times a yr and might do sled deck if I don't get out of the sport
