Been doing some researching online, but would like to know...

What do you have for a chip/programmer, do you like it, would you replace it with another one or would you recommend it?

TIA

I run a custom EFI Live tune from Black Bear Performance on my 2015 5.3 Max tow with the 6spd. We tuned the engine for 91+ octane as well as the transmission. Black Bear was also able to tune out the 4 cylinder mode and adjust the Speedo for different tire size.

The transmission tune does way more for driveability than the engine tune. Holds gears better, uses the torque in the engine a lot more, rarely hunts for a gear to be in. Only time I find it struggles is in higher load situations, (in 4wd) where first gear is too low and 2nd isn't low enough.

Biggest thing I like is that it gets rid of the hesitation or dead spot in the truck right before it shifts from 4 cyl, back to 8 when accelerating.

They ship a tuning box that plugs into the OBD, you do some logs with that unit plugged In. Email the logs back, they email you the tune, install the tune run a couple more logs and refine anything that doesn't quite seem right.

I think I'm on my 3rd transmission tune now and like it a lot. You can also read and clear codes with their hand held tuning box. Tuned the truck with 8000km on it and has over 110k now with 0 issues.

Personally I wouldn't waste money on a programmer for a gas engine. Very little gain for the money. May affect warranty on the truck as well. Not sure on the gas jobs but it does on the diesel for sure.

Thank you, this is a great reply and kind of what I have been reading online, with the best part of personal experience.

I will look into it

If you looking for serious power gains, a tuner ain't going to be the answer. Clearly you are not tuning for gas mileage on a gasser. Take it to davenport if you want serious HP gains.

What I have been reading, is that a programmer can shut off the AFM and you still get better mileage, without loosing any power.

So NO there isn't many gains to chip a gas pot, but there are programs that will help or enhance my little 5.3
I still have my holiday trailer that I bought new in 04 and only had an 85 Dodge 1/2 ton 318 to pull it. So also thinking when I hook on to the trailer, a programmer will help it a little too.

My first diesel was a 95 Chev 3/4 and that was 17 years ago, just throwing a cold air intake on, sobered up that truck.

So I'm not completely shy, when it comes to these things, just looking for a little helper for my new to me, pick me up truck

Have you got the 6spd or 8spd in your pick-up?
