There absolutely is a difference if you look at walmart and CT they spec out certain high volume filters from manufacturers and grind them on pricing... brings people in the door who also grab some oil and what ever else along the way. Basic Fram filters are one of the lower end brands that they typically do this with. Cut apart some filters and see the difference.
The stuff that comes out of the manufacturers isn't what I would call highest quality either. Guess it is up to the individual. If you feel you are getting a better product from the dealer than buy it. I just used Fram as an example as I use K&N when I replace. Yes I do buy oil for my truck at CT but I buy their higher end synthetic. To each their own I guess. I prefer to save some cash and buy beer instead :)

I’ve found over the last 5 years or so that the filter prices (wholesale)at the dealer are only marginally more than at the box stores. I’d gladly pay a dollar or two more for an OE filter that meets the warranty specs particularly on something that is still under warranty.
Like most stuff now, the quality of filters has gone downhill with stuff made in China.

You guys do realize the oem's don't make their own filters, or most parts for that matter.... Fram and wix make most filters in the world for everyone ;) ... The oem's are basically just assembly plants and parts storage facilities

True. But they do get to set the specs for products bearing their name. As I’m sure you’ll agree, not all filters or any other parts for that matter are made the same.

Most places do their inventory on a weekend, or they keep a list for their sales that day so they can adjust inventory appropriately. It's not a tough thing to do if you have a parts manager and parts guys that aren't retarded.

As far as filters go, there are only 2 or 3 companies that make most of the filters out there to the specs of their customers. I can't remember who exactly makes what but Fleetguard, Donaldson, and Baldwin are the biggest ones IIRC that supply for everyone else.

FWIW Fram sells one of the ****tiest ones I've ever seen.

One guys findings......
