The paint job on my Duramax has taken a bit of a chit kicking and is full of rock chips. I first intended to address a quarter size chip in each rear door and a couple other little chips. After further inspection, I realize that my truck is full of rock chips top to bottom, bumper to bumper - some of them are tiny and some of them are not.

I only have 160k on this truck and it needs to last me at least another 6 or 7 years. Can anyone recommend a good shop in Edmonton that would paint my truck for a reasonable price and warranty the paint job? ...not looking to cheep out, just want to make sure I don't overpay or get substandard work.

A well prepared base for a good paint job is expensive. There is no substitute unless you clean it up and use box liner on the entire truck in which case you can DIY for about $1,000 for materials. I just did my 6.5 box and it was four hours of prep and $160 of materials.

If you are looking for a good paint job, call Al's Restoration just east of Sherwood Park on Wye Road and Range Road 220. Al Minarchi is the owner and they do all kinds of custom work (watched them do a frame off on a early 70's Lotus) and restorations along with regular autobody. I am sure he can confirm what I said about base preparation and can give you a range of prices based on what level of preparation you want to do. His phone number is (780) 922-5642. They have done several jobs for me over the years while my kids were learning to drive and my wife's vehicle sat through a hail storm so I can personally vouch for the quality of his work. If you decide to give him a call, tell him "The assh*le with the snow blower recommended you."

After you have finished catching your breath over the cost of a complete paint redo, you should go to Ming auto refinishing where for a fraction of the cost they do amazing work touching up all of the chips and dents and power polish and wax everything. If most of your paint is OK, this is the more cost effective way to go for a used vehicle.

My 07 gmc was rusting good over the rear fenders.
I took it to a couple places. All told me it's cheaper to replace the box.
In the end. Decided to go with Armaguard spray. They did a good job. Cleaned up the rust. It will not stop it from rusting but should buy me another 5 to 10 years.

I thought it turned out good. $2500.00 fender wells were re coated as well.
Any color you want

That looks really good. Woulda never thought to do the bumpers as well. Unfortunately, the worst of my rock chips are above the rocker panel. I actually thought of doing the entire truck but it's a little too redneck for me.

Tough to find anymore. So many of the shops aren't interested anymore unless it's an insurance claim.

Yup, got my first denial yesterday from a dealership. They said that they only do collision repair and that a full, properly done paint job would kill the shop for too long. He was reluctant to recommend a place but did urge me to do lots of homework before handing my money over to someone.

Thanks man, that kinda affrims what the dealership told me yesterday and my brother in law swears by Ming's. I'm also going to have to do something on all my fenders where the paint is flaking off from those blasted bushwacker flares, so I'll probably do as you suggest and stop by Al's for some advice and a quote.

Maybe check pricing on doing a complete wrap? I've heard they can be some what less than a paint job and stand up very well? Likely have to clean up the big chips a bit.

Well, we are not really near Edmonton, but we do warranty our work for life. Complete paint on a full size truck with average dents and chips start at 10, rust can go up a lot from there. If you are serious about doing it, call Dwights place in Lethbridge. Ask for Noah. That's me lol.

Well, if you expect more road damage....Rock guard the entire truck yourself. clean, tape off glass, mirrors etc. lighty sand and spray. then paint. neighbour used the paintable cans from Canadian Tire the spray bombed her years ago and still is good. Depends what you want.

My friend in St Albert has a 69 that he has done up very nicely. Green with white stripes - 502 crate and six speed transmission. Very fun to drive and gets lots of looks.

Not to jack thread, but I got hail damage this summer on my 2015 f350. Insurance says I have to try PDR first then repaint what they can’t fix. I’m fairly particular, any suggestions around Edmonton area? I’m in Stony Plain.

Thanks

PDR is a no brainer. It is amazing what those guys can fix. They still need to work with a body shop that takes off the panels etc so they can access the damaged area. My wife's CX9 took a real sh*t kicking in a hail storm. Al's Restoration did the prep and reassembly and you could not tell that it was ever damaged. I don't know if any touch up painting was done as you absolutely could not tell it was damaged in the first place. Repainting would require body filler and tons of prep for nothing and it is no guaranty that it would match the original paint job. Just get it done.
