Ecoboost owners please read

My personal observation as I have mentioned in a previous thread is my 2015 eco is very sensitive to detonation. High ambient temps or heavy loads quickly cause an over fueling situation, to keep the engine within safe operating conditions. Easiest way to do this is add premium fuel. If the tune is designed to actually take advantage of the longer detonation times it is a win win with better fuel and likely better mileage. I honestly think these would be an incredible candidate for water/methanol injection. (wife won't Let me..) Cool dense air these things rock.

The reason I believe this to be true is this summer I was towing my horse trailer with 3 horses at +28C on Hwy 2. Mileage was brutal at 30L/100km into a head wind etc. So I had been thinking about this for a while and with out changing anything but grades of fuel from 87 reg to 91 premium the difference in mileage was staggering. I almost instantly gained 10L/100 instant. I was blown away. My 2c. Bicker away....

No bickering allowed in a Ford thread. Answer to 2 questions.............. Cold air kit cost about 150, tuner 395. No custom tune just an ecoboost canned downloaded from BDog. I'm sure any of the commercially available tunes would provide similar results. I've only seen 30L/100 once in it's life, pulling my loaded enclosed up the hill from Little Fort to 100 Mile House. 10% grade for 10K. Jeez what a road.

Kind of snickering up my right sleeve. Posted my trucks mileage and some thoughts in the "horrible fuel mileage ecoboost" thread and just left it at that. Now that another knowledgeable owner has jumped in with the tuner debate, here is my numbers and thoughts. Intake system (brand doesn't matter) and custom tune for me (old guy, tows 10%) did the exact same gains around 10% in fuel economy empty. Leave the exhaust alone, not worth the money or noise. But towing suffered a bit probably due to increased boost under load. So I talked to the tuner dudes and they suggested an economy tune with trans shift mods. Voila! 13% eco gain both towing and empty. If you are looking for more zip, smoother running and good eco gain, 91 tune s the answer. Eco tune does work however you have to keep your foot out of it, use the cruise on flat ground, keep your speed down, use your foot intelligently when towing and use 5th. 35,000 stock, 155,000 tuned, happy old retired dude. Headed out over the big hills for a couple of weeks in the Chilliwack area for some dualsport riding or quad if the white stuff sticks around.

I'm not trying to pick on you, but the same can be said for pretty much any vehicle, tuned or not. I've had programmed gas and diesels and unless you're putting on fairly big miles, the payback math is very fuzzy. Like you already said, if a person drives smarter, you're going to save more fuel, regardless.
