Will an over the counter handheld vhf radio suffice as communication for loggers when travelling on active roads? Is it as simple as purchasing one (160.00) and off we go?

It will as long as it’s programmed with the required channels.
Not much range but works just fine.

get a magnetic roof top antenna and it will almost double your range. Not many handhelds i have come across that i would trust though, there is one that seemed to work good. Over the counter ones are very low wattage.

What brand are you looking at? agree with above grab a roof top mag mount to get a bit of extra range. Iv had no issues with range on my portable as long as you can get 2km plus you should be good i easily get 5 plus km with mine.. I switched over to a mobile in my truck now since i found a good deal on used and use it for work as well.
