Strathcona County RCMP closed out the month of January with a discovery of nearly $1 million of stolen goods.
Having been alerted by Edmonton Police Service early on the morning of Friday, Jan. 30, shortly before 1 a.m., Strathcona County RCMP began to track a stolen vehicle entering into the county’s borders.
Two Enforcement Services officers followed the vehicle and stopped at a property on Range Road 231 near Township Road 512, not owned by the driver of the vehicle.
“As officers arrived, a male was observed fleeing from the vehicle. When attempting to locate the male, police determined that there was several stolen vehicles on the property,” explained Const. Chantelle Kelly, media liaison with Strathcona County RCMP.
“The investigation led to a search warrant being executed on the property resulting in the seizure of two Ford trucks, a travel trailer, a utility trailer and numerous tools and construction items.”
Kelly said another result of the investigation was a second property being identified in Tofield just east of Strathcona County, where a search warrant was executed.
Combined forces of Tofield RCMP and county RCMP resulted in the seizure of three snowmobiles, two utility trailers, three trucks, an ATV, a dump trailer and other miscellaneous items.
The value of all the recovered stolen property so far totals approximately $800,000.
“There might be some more charges coming — there was a lot of property that they’re still determining if it was stolen or not,” Kelly added, noting that other items likely include construction tools and electronics.
“We’re lucky that we were able to recover this property,” Kelly said.
“The property that was taken was Alberta-wide, and as a result of finding this property, we were able to close multiple and numerous stolen property files within the province.”
Affected communities across the province include Camrose, Wainwright, Thorsby, Edmonton, Tofield, Vermilion, Stettler, Bashaw, Forestburg, Vegreville and Coronation.
Jason Peter Emter, 40, and Cindy Mae McArthur, 45, of Tofield have been charged with eight counts of possession of stolen property not exceeding $5,000, seven counts of possession of stolen property exceeding $5,000, two counts of tampering with a vehicle identification number and two counts of fraudulent concealment.
Emter was also charged with four counts of possession of stolen property exceeding $5,000 and one count of possession of an illegal substance. He is scheduled to appear in Sherwood Park Provincial Park on Wednesday, Feb. 11 at 9:30 a.m. McArthur is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday, Feb. 25 at 9:30 a.m.
In addition, Ashley Robert Sherwin, 34, of Edmonton has been charged with one count of possession of stolen property not exceeding $5,000, one count of possession of stolen property exceeding $5,000, one count of obstruction and two counts of fail to comply with recognizance. Sherwin is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday, Feb. 18 at 9:30 a.m.
