For those wanting to access the air bands a very cheap quansheng UV-K5, then you can do a firmware flash egzumer also add it to chirp software for an amazing amount of stuff you can do with it. Then there is the Tidradio TD-H8 nice radio with unreal wattage on the UHF 15watts. Here is a link to the 30 dollar radio and an hour or so of the crazy stuff it can do and time it takes to be able to access all the functions. Don't blame me if you brick the radio.

I bought one of the Quansheng UV-K5 radios on a black Friday deal===$24. and free shipping. After "unlocking" the radio it programmed up real easy, Looked at the firmware flash but not smart enough to figure it out. Gave it to a friend to listen to airplanes but have not got it back yet. Looks like a neat radio to have--has a few other options that some people will use.

After dragging out countless different types of handhelds on a foggy morning for testing ranges, it was a stark reminder why you should not be using handhelds on the logging roads. Most did not even reach 500 meters, some made it 1k. Only one out the bunch make it 3k, the large Leixen UV-25D which on testing reached 33 watts. All were tested with the same antenna except for 2 models that had female ends.
