If it is new don’t you need ro show them the sales documents from the dealer? That would pretty much say it is a dirt bike. If it is used then you would have the old registration.
Sorry to bump an old thread but I’m confused as well. As are law enforcers I’m told. In Oregon we can’t register anything as a snowmobile that is registered as anything else. My CRF450R is registered as a class III OHV. So it’s a no go. I’d hoped my Camso would come with its own title so I could register just that as a snowmobile, it did not.
the upside is that since it is a OHV technically it does not have to have a working brake light. Just a red tail after dark.
the down side is I’m not sure how the Sheriff’s will respond...because if we are confused, they may be also. Time will tell.
Called the USFS today and the DMV.
DMV said they would register it as a snowmobile or OHV but gave no guarantee what was necessary. USFS said..
“Good morning
You can convert a motorcycle to a snow bike. It must be registered as a snowmobile and have the appropriate permits.
Something to keep in mind. If this is a dual sport bike and you convert it and register it as a snowmobile it is my understanding the DMV will not allow it to be registered as a motorcycle again. I am not 100% sure of this but if it would have an impact on you I would suggest you check with the DMV.
Thank you for asking.”
So if they are the enforcer I guess I register as a snowmobile even though ORS 801.490 clearly states that Snowmobile.” “Snowmobile” means a self-propelled vehicle that:
4. Is not registered in this state as a vehicle other than a snowmobile.
