outlander engine light on?

09 outlander, when you put it into reverse it reads "E" on the cluster and the engine light comes on and says limp home. It works in reverse but the engine light won't go out unless you turn the quad off and restart it. All the other gears read what gear they are in, just not reverse. suggestions?
