Is there anything to watch out for on a 2004 Summit X? Is this a good sled? The one I'm looking at has the 800 engine on a 144 track. I'm new to the sport and I'm still looking for a decent and reliable starter sled. I know that everyone speaks highly of the 06's but I don't know if I want to spend another couple grand to get into one.

Thanks.

2004 was the first year Ski-doo went to the very light rev chassis maybe too light. Tip it on its side, check underneath the tunnel, and look for any bang us or cracks.

half way through 03 was actually the first revs was it not?
even so i think the 04s wouldn't be much difference.

How many km's? The original pistons were only good for 2000-3000km and should be upgraded. They had bad rings, other than that they are a great sled.

Slamnek, Its got less then 1000km on a new engine. And I'll check the tunnel for damage or cracks, thanks for pointing that out Work2Ride.

Make sure you check the carb boots for cracking and delamination.

Britt

And if they are cracked, replace with V-Force 3 reeds. They made a big difference on my sled. If everything is straight it should be a good machine.

I've got the 04 800 with the 159 and it does rip.... I like it a lot! I've got 3500kms on the stock motor and it still runs great, but with all the talk about the bad rings I'm considering doing the top end just in case.

I did the first top end on my 05 at 3000km and the rings were pitted and flaking so i would definatly replace them.

I have an 04 with 2300 miles and just going to open it up for a top end this weekend. It has ran flawless since the day off the showroom floor. Depending on the topend I may splurge and put a 156x16x2.5 track, everyone seems to be bragging these new tracks.

Is it a pricey job?

Depends on how big your wallet is, if the top is in decent shape you can get away with $500 rebuild but if you want to bigbore or dig into the bottom you could get up to $2500. I called mountain magic and he has the RK Tek drop in kit complete with the high comp head for $1000. I think this is what I will be doing.
