Ok guys - will need a little help here.

Son just got a dirtbike (XR 125) from his "uncle" for Xmas. This of course means dad will need to buy one too, because hey he can't ride alone and will need supervision. ;)

So I will first want to buy something used. I have enough $ tied up in sleds.

I have not ridden a bike for any length of time in close to 25 years. When I quit, I was racing 250 and Open bikes. That was still in the 2 stroke days. I think last bikes I had were the 1985 Husky 250 and 500. Pretty much just stopped completely when I started barefoot waterskiing competitively.

So I have no idea what I should be looking for in new bikes. I am thinking something in an enduro cross country? Likely we will just be trail riding here and taking bikes to BC around Vernon to trail ride. Lots of great 2 track there. Also - will be putting around for a couple of years with my son - so I will need something with mostly low end.

Had the thought that it might be fun to trade off one of the sleds I have for around here and build a snowbike? What would work best for that?

Any help would be appreciated

CRF 450x or a ktm530 that would be a great bike put a rekluse clutch in it no worries when you make it a snow bike. Great power and the x has good low end for riding with your son and lite of power for when u want to play. If you want to get something a little older a xr650 might do the trick as well.

93hp? try again. they put a stock 500 2 smoker in a 4 stroke frame, they offer porting and exhaust mods. you would have to spend a lot of cash to get that kind of power and I doubt it's even possible if you want it to live for more than 10 minutes.

I agree with mavrick, get a 450x. great all around bike with plenty of jam and it will last years if you keep it off the rev limiter.

i bought a used 2006? kx450 for 3000.00 2 yrs ago when my son had a 2007 rm 125 ( he wanted a 250 4 stroke but i talked him into the 2 stroke because that is what i grew up on). I have never had as much fun on any bike as that 450. It changed my mind on 2 strokes!

I've been thru there quite a few times, blink and you miss it type of thing.

he's set up pretty good, has a nice acreage outside of GP, wife and a couple kids. he has a camp in kakwa, I usually stay with him out there for a week in the spring and put some miles on the sleds.
