I'm a fairly new member here but have quite a few friends that frequent this site. I'm on a quest for a Can am of sorts. 2010+ renegade or outlander. But at any rate I would like to share a story and a heads up on a quad.

Quad in Question is a 2010 Renegade XXC with mudlites, center skid plate, fender flares, hmf pipe and a twin air filter. The Cluster on the quad says 175 or so km's.

I drove from Edmonton to Calgary with a certified cheque to pick the quad up, His story went as follows "I bought the quad for myself and my 14 year old son to enjoy, but later decided that we hated getting muddy and now its for sale"

Once arriving and looking the quad over, it was noticeable that the quad was rolled, thats fine, he told me he suspected it, bars rubbing on the plastic, heavy scratches at the peaks of the plastic, cracked air box, scratches on the brake controls... minor, but worth noting. The rest of the quad was VERY clean. axles, shocks, rims, a-arms, frame, etc all very clean.

Side note: my parents came with me and my dad noticed 2 artic cat m8 mountain sleds in the shop aswell, the owner said he just bought those sleds for him and his son, they are having a complete blast riding in the quartz creek area... I dont know many 14 year olds that can do that..

So I fire the quad up, let it warm up. Sounds cherry, afterall it only has 175kms on the thing! I hop on to go for a little rip down the street. I instantly hear some knocking, BAD knocking. Now I was curious... So I put the quad to the pin quickly and the knocking got so loud I thought everything inside the engine was 50% off and was about to yard sale. Brought the quad back, didn't say much and started to search on my phone. Checked the cam position sensor, not rubbing, humm and hawed for a bit then finally told the guy the thing is hurt... He didn't believe me, didn't know what to say. Told me he never noticed that noise.... then later says he does remember that noise but thought it was normal. I check the oil, turns out he just changed the oil, its clean as whistle. Air box has no oil in it, so that was cleaned out.... Not much else I can check on my side. So I tell him, its gotta go to a dealer, they can call me and relay what they find and we can discuss a price after. It was to go to bowcycle. He promised me it was going there...

3 days go by, I called him 2 of the 3 days to find out the scoop, he told me he would call me once he found out about the quad... I search kijiji, quad is not listed anymore... I have a friend call and check, yup he says the quad is sold(Nov 26). Now, I remember some related items he had on kijiji so I pull them up, and I find that he now has a rolled renegade 800x being parted out, but he took the engine, everything else is available... So I do a quick search on kijiji, and the rolled quad he is parting out, was listed on kijiji by a different address, phone number, dirty, for 3900. Good engine, just bent frame, wrote off type of deal...

Here come the dates of this all...
I looked at the XXC on November 22, The rolled quad he bought was listed on November 24, The XXC owner listed the parted out quad on November 26th, minus engine. He says the quad is sold... however in his pic you can see one of the M8's that he bought, and you can see the front of the XXC... In short, I KNOW he didn't sell the quad to start with, he is swapping engines because he knows it is hurt and got caught trying to flog it. I told him if I saw the quad on kijiji with no mention of the engine being hurt I would report him. He seemed pretty bummed about that and said "well that sucks, now I'm stuck with it"

I wish I had saved pictures of the original ad, however.... Keep an eye out for a 2010 Renegade XXC with 175-190kms, kinked rear fender, fender flares, center skid plate, mudlites and a hmf pipe. Listed in the Calgary Area. The engine going in it is from a 09 with unknown km's, and appears from a pretty good wreck. I talked to Bowcycle and the quad never did go in to get checked out.(they are maybe 1km away from eachother)

Here are the kijiji links...

So he actually called me, Engine is completely wiped, push rods bent, rust on wrist pin, cylinders all gouged up, crank slop, clutches are completely covered in oxidization and rusty. I'm not sure if he confessed as a couple of us called him on it or not... I had to push to get some answers.

Hopefully if he gets it all back together he will let others know that havn't read this thread.

The search goes on!!

hi guys... when i started reading this thread it sounded familar... i don't think at the time that you were looking at it they knew what was wrong with the motor... Karl's son was talking to me via text aready after you discovered the rattle/knock.. they did not know what it was... i could not get over there to listen to it myself but after a bit of discussion they decided to tear the engine down.. as they were tearing it down thats when they discovered the damage... after reading this thread i made then aware of it thru our quad crazy site we have on FB. with all the discussion Karl decided to phone you back which was what any stand up guy would do imo.. so maybe not as bad as previously stated... i have rode with both of them and they are nice people....

and how am i doing? well i still healing.. its quicker every day.. hopfully do my fixing on the quad soon here and maybe get out for a ride during xmas.. i think i wont be out till then anyways..maybe more hope not but still have some healing to do...

i also found that small part of the statement fairly weird... there are alot of kids that age that have there own ski and go to the mountains with their parents or friends.. when i was 13 my cousins who were like 13 and 16 where already riding in the mountains and i was going along sometimes..

I appreciate you speaking up and relaying the message. You have to understand that I have no idea who Karl is or who you are. There is no time to post up on a forum asking if anyone knows about a certain quad listed on kijiji. You know as well as I do that kijiji moves fast, if you want to buy you go and you better know what you are looking at.

"Karl's son was talking to me via text aready after you discovered the rattle/knock.. they did not know what it was..."

My concern with this statement is when I was there, Karl told me he never knew of the sound, thought it was a normal sound... Then the more we talked the statements changed to "you know, maybe I heard the noise and its getting worse and worse, I really dont know"
There was not one mention that the engine could be hurt. That was myself letting him know that something was up and its not good news.

"with all the discussion Karl decided to phone you back which was what any stand up guy would do imo.. so maybe not as bad as previously stated... i have rode with both of them and they are nice people...."

Correct, it was standup for sure, not doubting that. But again, going in there I have no idea who he is. The oil was crystal clean, he told me he just changed it. I rode it, quad sounded like it was going to cough the rods out of itself. Ive seen it before, drain the oil, hide all the slag inside and see if it can get peddled to the next guy. NOT saying this is the case after the fact now, its looks very suspicous from my end before I made this post and got phone calls back.

"also found that small part of the statement fairly weird... there are alot of kids that age that have there own ski and go to the mountains with their parents or friends.. when i was 13 my cousins who were like 13 and 16 where already riding in the mountains and i was going along sometimes.."

This was in regards to a 14 year old riding an Artic Cat M8 (800cc) with a 153" track on non groomed trails? I wish my parents would let me do that when I was that age... Where Karl described my dad said it sounded quite odd for that big of a sled and that young of a rider, He could have mixed up where they were riding, My dad knows the areas between Golden and Revi like the back of his hand.

At any rate, I have not hidden anything. The whole story is out there. Karl has a mess to deal with, no nice way to put it. The replacement quad he bought has an 08 engine in it... You cannot swap magnetos from the 2010s to the 2008s as the crank is different. Not sure how all that will work with the powersteering... Build an engine and never recoup the money or sell as is. I know for sure the engine wont be just a top end refesh. Its going to need a crank in it for sure. I feel sorry for the guy, he seems to truly have not known what he was getting himself into and is now stuck with a 2 quads that are now basket cases.

Good for you for knowing your stuff and doing the right research before buying. There's lots of sketchy stuff everywhere and especially kijiji. And there's also 2 sides to every story but from what info you provided its understandable how you feel and I'd probably feel the same due to the amount of actual scumbags out there.

And the "14 year old riding a mountain sled" comment gave me a chuckle too. I know you're new to the site but I've heard tons of stories from people here who ride with their kids, many younger than 14, who ride full size large bore sleds. I've only been part of the sledding community for 1 year and was very surprised by how many skilled young riders there are out there.

Anyways good luck with your search for a machine. There's lots of good used units out there. I know I'd never try to sell mine as one. I've beat the sh!t out of it!

After buying enough garbage off Kijiji, you really gotta be careful. Always run the VIN to see if its clean. I have brought a quad that was parked on the grass (hiding the oil leak, didn't think too much of it and it in the long run, hasn't been a problem). Picked up my sled on teth-air that was parked on his trailer, brought this sled at 8pm at night. 2 months later the engine let go after a cracked intake boot.

You really have to be careful and do your research. The nice thing about Kijiji is they have a high turnover rate, which means if you know what you want, you'll get what you want sooner or later.
