Well this pains me a lot, as a die hard can-am guy, owned several yamaha's I'm looking for a new atv on a budget. Found some 2012 polaris sportsmans 550 xp non eps for a solid price. Way less than anything I've come across. I ride all terrains, sand dunes, Forrest roads, mud, skeg. It'll be used for work. What's good/bad on these? Any things I should look after or expect from new? Thanks in advance

edit. I do ride hard, it will be jumped and pushed to its limits at times

i bought the 2012 550 eps xp in june, and i'am impressed at first i wondered if i should have gone with a the 850 but after my first ride i was wondering no more. My dad bought the 850 and honestly it is a monster when you hammer on the throttle you just hang on. I find with my 550 i can hit the throttle full tilt and still be in total control. it has an amazing amount of power. it will go anywhere a 850 or 1000 will go. and i have rode with plenty of 700's or 750's and it is equal in power and speed to these units. The only thing i know will effect my power is when i get bigger mudding tires which is fine throw an exhaust on and a efi programmer and clutch kit and you will gain back more power then you had before even with the bigger tires. hope this helps you, i love my 550 xp and would buy it again in a heartbeat. plus them polaris ride like cadillacs lol

I recently tried a friends 2012 850xp. I would buy the 850. If you could still find a 2012 they are cheap. He got his with power steering for 8800.00 @ cycleworks acheson.

I always price out the Camrose Polaris dealer and see if I can beat or match his price, closer to Edmonton.
I have an 2012 550 XP and love it, performance wise it is about the same as my 2002 700 Sportsman I had. The only heads up I have for you is the plastic in the right rear fender can get very hot where the exhaust pipe comes close to it. I have heard some people have had some melting issues there, but I have not had a problem on mine.

once you've owned a XP, nothing else will compare.

Especially to the repair bills ha ha!! When you pick it up order new control arm bushings right off the bat. :D

I like the power of my 850, the power steering is awesome - so much better then my Grizzly and the ride/handling is really good. Just wish Polaris could build suspension that would last like Yamaha, 9000km on the Grizzly and no play in any suspension parts but after 1200km the 850 needed all of the front bushings replaced.
