Looking to go to the Abraham Lake area for a weekend and I was wondering where the best places are to random camp?? I know there are some private campgrounds in the area but i probably cannot stage out of them, what a PITA. Anyways I have heard there are lots of areas, anybody have any advice on best spots for scenery and staging to the trails?? Thanks in advance

When I went out that way, a couple weeks ago, I found that closer to the lake, all the spots were either totally exposed (open area, no trees) or taken. I like to camp a little further away from the neighbors than was available, so we went down the forestry trunk road and camped right near the river. Great access to trails and cut-lines, but is a heck of a ride if you want to get to the lake itself.

I wasn't sure what "random" camping would be like, either, but if you haven't been out that way, don't worry about it, you'll find a spot for sure.

Best spots are at the turnoff to the information teepee, on the right or before that well treed to the west.. If you go all the way down to the river you end up in the wind. Don't be in the open, big winds off the lake. But there are a lot of places to camp especially on a regular weekend. Trails start across the big dam, pretty easy riding. The trail across the highway (N) and a bit to the west is very chewed up for the first few kms(this trail is a loop to Crescent Falls) after that pretty easy going. We were just there august long.

from the dam site ride back out to the hiway 11 cross hiway 11 and head west till the trail turns into the bush follow the trail and take the first trail to the left maybe 10 km follow that and then take a right at the next junction (left goes up to the lookout nice view of the lake from up there) right takes you to cresent falls
you can not ride your quad right to the falls only to the horse staging area there is a trail that follows the canyon back out to hiway 11 (be careful as a couple parts are right on the edge of the canyon ) and then you can head west in the ditch back to the dam site

To get to Baldy, theres a road about 1km west of nordegg on hwy 11, go north on that road past Shunda Creek campground, take a right at the first fork, follow it maybe 4-5 km north til you get to the gates. Steep-ish old road with a coulple switchbacks up to the fire lookout

Sorry but I have to make a correction. The trailhead to go up Baldy is up the Shunda Creek road but that road entrance is only a few hundred feet (to the right, or north) from the south turn into Nordegg off highway #11, not 1 km. And since this is an old post I am sure that Mad Outy Max has already been.

Just depends on the kind of spring we have. May long theres usually a bit of snow in the higher shady areas, not enough to stop a quad or anything though. Bighorn can be pretty nuts may long depending on which area you camp in. The rail line is an excellent ride from nordegg to saunders, but its pretty hard to get back on after the misty valley subdivision
