New recreational rules introduced for Willow Creek area

Province zones area to prevent damage to land and to protect public safety
Edmonton... Recent destructive and irresponsible behavior in the Willow Creek area 120 km southwest of Calgary has prompted the Alberta government to introduce new recreational rules for the area under a Forest Land Use Zone (FLUZ).
"Alberta is addressing the challenges of an increasingly busy landscape," said Ted Morton, Minister of Sustainable Resource Development (SRD). "During my recent visits to Willow Creek I saw many Albertans enjoying recreational activities responsibly, but I also witnessed considerable activity that is both irresponsible and damaging to public land. The destructive behaviour I saw on the May long weekend will no longer be tolerated."
The new rules in the Willow Creek area take effect immediately and are designed to reduce impacts to natural resources, reduce conflict between users and enhance public safety. Over the coming weeks the Alberta government will inform area users about the new rules, stressing how they can enjoy the area responsibly.
Visitors to Willow Creek this long weekend are asked to note the new rules:

• Camping is permitted in designated areas only and may not exceed 14 days. New signs will mark these areas.
• On-highway vehicles exceeding 363 kg are only permitted to be used to transport people and equipment to camping and staging areas on routes designated by signs.
• Off-highway vehicles heavier than 363 kg are not permitted in the FLUZ.
• Motor vehicles that weigh 363 kilograms (800 pounds) or less are still permitted within the Willow Creek FLUZ.

Morton said it's important to recognize that this is the first step toward a broader access management plan for the Livingston-Porcupine Hills-Willow Creek region, which will be developed in consultation with local municipalities and user-groups. Morton also acknowledged the many volunteers and recreational user groups who tirelessly promote responsible recreation and help maintain trails and random camping areas. "I look forward to continuing to work with these Albertans to improve the management of recreation on public lands."
Implementing the Willow Creek FLUZ is an important action under Premier Ed Stelmach's plan to manage Alberta's growth pressures. Other priorities for the government are to govern with integrity and transparency, build a stronger Alberta, improve Albertans' quality of life and provide safe and secure communities.
